Manchester United are reportedly confident of signing Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur before next month’s transfer deadline. The Belgium international was heavily tipped for an Old Trafford move in June but the negotiations reached an impasse after Spurs placed a £75m price tag on the defender’s head.
Since then, the 29-year-old has gone on to star for Belgium at the World Cup where he picked up the bronze medal and shortly after the tournament, he happened to aim a dig at Spurs for his limited gametime during the backend of last season.
According to The Independent, transfer talks regarding the centre-back are yet to restart between the sides but there is the feeling that Jose Mourinho’s side will finalise the defender’s transfer before the deadline on August 9.
At present, United are sufficiently covered in the centre-back department with Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof, Marcos Rojo among the senior defenders who can fulfil the role but Mourinho is nevertheless said to want another central defender with vast experience.
Alderweireld’s current deal includes a £25m release clause which could be triggered during the final year of his contract next summer and United could take advantage of this situation to agree a reduced fee with Spurs prior to the transfer deadline.
