Nigeria on Tuesday night, September 11, beat Liberia 2-1 in an international friendly match. The match which was played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, Monrovia, was to retire the number 14 jersey of President George Weah.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) used the match to celebrate the only African player to ever win the World Footballer of the Year after he emerged as the number one citizen of Liberia earlier this year.
Expectedly every touch of the ball by Weah was greeted with loud cheers and applause from the fans who thoroughly enjoyed themselves watching some of the best past and present African players on parade.
Henry Onyekuru who made a return to the Super Eagles scored the first goal in the 11th minute after a brilliant assist from Super Eagles captain John Ogu.
Liberia scored their only goal in the 89th minute via a penalty through Kpah Sherman, but they could not score the needed goal that would have saved them from a defeat as Nigeria won the match 2-1.
