The State of Cyber Threats: China, Russia and Iran

A new report from the U.S. government's spy-catchers says that China, Russia and Iran are "three of the most capable and active cyber actors" when it comes to stealing American economic information, but the playing field is not even. The report, published today by the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, says China's hacking activity against U.S. targets dropped off noticeably after a 2015 cyber agreement, but the Asian giant continues to go after  "cleared defense contractors or IT and communications firms whose products and services support government and private sector networks worldwide." "China's cyberspace operations are part of a complex, multipronged technology development strategy that uses licit and illicit methods to achieve its goals," the report says, describing subtle, off-line information collection avenues like "academic collaborations" and "research partnerships." Egyptian zoo accused of painting donkey to look like zebra

Zebra or donkey? The answer isn't so black and white.  Egyptian zoo is insisting it did not paint a pair of donkeys to look like zebras. A zoo in Egypt rejected accusations it painted a donkey to pass it off as a zebra after a photo of the animal in question went viral. Mahmoud Sarhan recently visited Cairo’s International Garden municipal park when he spotted something he thought was not entirely right with two zebras in a pen. He shared the photos on Facebook and they were widely shared. At first look, the animal appears to be a zebra. But many social media users have noted that upon closer inspection, the animal has long floppy ears instead of the more rounded ears of a zebra. Some critics noted the "zebra/donkey" had unusual smudges on its face, and did not have clean stripes. Local veterinarians weighed in on the images with mixed opinions. Mohamed Sultan, the zoo’s director, denied the accusations that the animals in the pen are imposters, the

When it comes to market capitalization, Facebook  was worth $629.6 billion yesterday. The company is now worth $506.2. In other words, Facebook has lost $123.4 billion in value overnight. Today’s performance isn’t due to yet another data misuse or election interfering scandal. The company has reported disappointing earnings. For the first time, Facebook’s growth is stalling. There are barely more people checking Facebook every day compared to previous quarter. Even worse, Facebook’s user base shrank in Europe. Facebook is still growing, but it’s clear that GDPR combined with a saturated market aren’t helping the company. That’s why Facebook is trying to change the narrative. For the first time, the company shared a new “family of apps audience” metric. There are 2.5 billion people using at least one of

Twitter Shadow Banning Is Donald Trump's Latest Social Media Cause

The president’s latest Twitter target is Twitter itself. This morning, Trump took to the platform to call out the alleged “shadow banning” of Republican users. It’s the latest in long standing conservative and right-wing complaints regarding perceived unfair treatment at the hands of social media platforms. This latest round stems, in part, from a recent Vice story highlighting Twitter’s removal of certain users — including Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel — from autofill search results. “The notion that social media companies would suppress certain political points of view should concern every American,” McDaniel told Vice. “Twitter owes the public answers to what’s really going on.” Twitter “SHADOW BANNING” prominent Republicans. Not good. We will look into this discriminatory and illegal practice at once! Many complaints. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2018 “We are aware that some accounts are not automatically populating in our search box and ship

Devin Nunes Gifted With Bright, Yellow Sneakers to Help Him Run Away from Tough Questions

Congressman Devin Nunes (R-CA) just got some sweet new kicks in case he ever feels like running away from reporters who might ask him difficult questions. For the last few months, Nunes has been mocked and ridiculed by the Swamp Accountability Project, an organization devoted to challenging Donald Trump and other “ethically-challenged politicians” who embody the swamp that the president promised to drain. Republican consultant Liz Mair is a spokeswoman for the group, and she recently pulled a prank on Nunes for ducking questions about the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation by leaving in the middle of a Rules Committee hearing. Mair filmed a video of herself delivering some brand new sneakers to Nunes’ office so he can run away from future tough situations in style and comfort. “He hasn’t been very courageous about taking questions, answering questions,” Mair said. “So we feel these are appropriate for Devin Nunes, and they’ll keep him comfortable while evad
