NLC STRIKE: Unions close aviation agencies at Lagos airport

The organised labour on Thursday shut down offices of aviation agencies at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos to press home their demands for the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage. However, this action did not affect flight operations at the nation’s busiest airport as airlines and passengers went about their respective businesses without harassment from the unions. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC) had called for the warning strike over non-implementation of the national minimum wage. Their affiliates in the aviation sector, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) had shut down the agencies in compliance with the directive. The union members had at the early hours of Thursday ba...

Breaking: VAR to be used in Champions league next season

Video Assistant Referees will be used in the Champions League from the 2019/20 season and will also be introduced at the 2020 European Championship, UEFA said on Thursday. European football's governing body revealed a decision had been taken at a meeting of their executive committee to bring in the technology, which will be used from the playoff round preceding the group stage of the Champions League. It will also be used in next year's UEFA Super Cup and in the Europa League from the 2020/21 season. In addition, it will be used in the finals of the new Nations League competition, although only from 2021. UEFA's move follows the use of VAR at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, when it was deemed largely to be a success. "We're confident that introducing VAR in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient, successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the...

Tablet computer 'kills child' in car crash in Spain

The death of a girl hit by a tablet computer in a car accident has raised concerns about the safety of using such devices in moving vehicles. The three-year-old was killed after her mother's car collided with the back of a school bus in Spain on Monday. Local reports indicate the girl was strapped into an Isofix-anchored child seat but the impact caused the tablet to fly into her face. Road safety organisations have stressed that the tragedy was highly unusual. The accident occurred in Vilanova de Arousa, a town in the north-west of Spain. The child has not been named but is reported to be the granddaughter of a well-known local businessman. Although the cause of death has yet to be confirmed, the police have said that the unsecured tablet had appeared to have caused severe head injuries. The girl's 26-year-old mother and a student on the bus were said to have been treated for minor injuries. "This is a tragic accident, which will send a shud...

Roman Abramovich: Chelsea owner deemed potential 'security threat' by Swiss police

The Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was denied Swiss residency because police warned that he could be a threat to Switzerland, reports say. Switzerland's federal police advised officials to reject his application over suspicions he might be involved in money laundering or have contact with criminal organisations. Mr Abramovich denies any wrongdoing. The owner of Chelsea football club has never been indicted in Switzerland or elsewhere. The allegations are based on unverified police suspicions which emerged after the Zurich-based publisher Tamedia obtained a letter written by police. Mr Abramovich's lawyer has said that the billionaire has never had, or been alleged to have, connections with criminal organisations. He fought a legal battle to try to prevent the story being published. The Tamedia group has won that battle after several months and now its news outlets, including 24 heures, have reported that the Federal Office of Police viewed Mr Abram...

Paul Pogba & Jose Mourinho clash and fall-out: Where do Manchester United go from here?

Wonder why Pogba and Mourinho is trending on Twitter? Here is the answer. A clip of Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho having a training ground exchange - described as "frosty footage" on social media by one broadcaster - had two million views in just one hour on Wednesday and Pogba and Mourinho has been trending ever since. The level of scrutiny and interest in the two men's interactions has spiked again after another bleak few days at Manchester United. There was an unexpected home draw with Wolves, more criticism of the manager's tactics and an EFL Cup exit on home soil to Championship club Derby. In the last two months alone, media storms have erupted over the club's transfer policy, manager Mourinho's treatment of striker Anthony Martial and now, what appears to be, his broken relationship with £89m record signing Pogba. Mourinho says there is "no problem". Can we believe Jose when he says there has been no fall-out? If it is tru...

Stefan Lofven: Sweden's parliament removes prime minister

Sweden's centre-left prime minister, Stefan Lofven, will have to stand down after losing the support of parliament. The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) backed the vote to remove him, weeks after a general election that delivered a hung parliament. Mr Lofven was opposed by 204 MPs, with 142 voting in favour. The parliamentary speaker will now propose a new prime minister, with centre-right leader Ulf Kristersson seen as the most likely candidate. Mr Lofven is expected to stay on as caretaker prime minister while his replacement is decided, in a process that could take weeks. What happens next? Mr Lofven, the leader of the Social Democrats, came to power in 2014. In this month's election, his centre-left bloc won 144 seats, one more than the centre-right bloc led by Mr Kristersson. Neither of the blocs intends to govern with the SD, the third-largest party in the new parliament with 62 seats. A member of Mr Kristersson's Moder...

Mourinho has attempted to underline his authority after an error by Pogba led to Wolves' equaliser at Old Trafford on Saturday and the player's subsequent comments criticising United's tactics. Pogba, 25, tried to play down his comments in a tweet on Monday. In his programme notes for Tuesday's game with Derby, Mourinho said he was unhappy with some members of his squad. "The game against Wolves was an important lesson; a lesson that I repeat week after week after week, a lesson that some boys are not learning," he said. "Every team that play Manchester United are playing the game of their lives, and we need to match that le...

The protesters were not attacked by the armed policemen stationed at the INEC office to prevent the place from being invaded. The protesters were armed with placards with various inscriptions such as: “No to rerun”, “INEC, don’t conspire with APC”, and “The people spoke on Saturday, announce the result” among others. They sang anti-APC songs as they hurled abuses at the ruling party for allegedly stealing Senator Ademola Adeleke’s mandate. They berated INEC for not declaring Adeleke the winner of the poll having scored the highest number of votes in the poll. They said INEC colluded with the ruling party to rob Adeleke of victory. Mr Systrom, chief executive, said they were departing to "explore our curiosity and creativity again". Instagram was purchased by Facebook in 2012 for $1bn (£760m) in cash and stock and has more than one billion users. There had been reports of tension between the pair and Facebook, and the departures add to what has been a troubling year for the parent company. Mr Systrom, 34, the CEO, and Mr Krieger, 32, the chief technical officer, started the image sharing site in 2010, and continued to run the service after it was acquired by Facebook. In a blog post, Mr Systrom said: "We're now ready for our next chapter. "Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that's what we plan to do." ...
