Midfielders Arthur and Miralem Pjanic have both completed medicals and signed contracts with Juventus and Barcelona, respectively, and the two European heavyweights are expected to make an official announcement today, reports claim.
Juventus have been trying to sign 20-cap Brazil international Arthur for several months.
But the financial constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic left Maurizio Sarri’s side struggling to complete an expensive transfer.
The Serie A champions therefore needed to get creative by offering one of their best players in exchange.
And Bosnia-Herzegovina international Pjanic, who Barcelona have long admired, ticked all the boxes.
The deal had initially stalled because Arthur wasn’t interested in leaving the Nou Camp.
But the 23-year-old has since changed his opinion and the audacious swap deal is now imminent.
Juventus will pay around £63million for Arthur, while Pjanic will move in the opposite direction for roughly £55m.
According to Goal, Arthur and Pjanic completed their respective medicals on Sunday and then signed their contracts.
Arthur’s five-year contract is worth £87,000-a-week but will increase to £104,000-a-week when various bonuses are achieved.
The former Gremio star, who made 72 appearances for Barcelona since joining in 2018, will be tied to the Allianz Stadium until June 2025.
Both players will finish the campaign with their current sides but Barca wanted the move completed before June 30 for financial reasons.
The move will come as a surprise to many. Arthur recently conducted an interview and made it clear that he was only interested in staying at Camp Nou.
“There are always speculations but honestly my idea is very clear, the only option that interests me is to continue in Barcelona,” the 23-year-old said in a statement released by his communications company.
“I am very safe and calm. I feel very good here and I also thank the club and the coaching staff for their trust. That is another reason to be totally clear that my only wish is to continue.”
