Bayern manager Flick bids farewell to Thiago Alcantara ahead of Liverpool move

Thiago Alcantara – who was available for a cut-price with his contract coming to an end – is expected to sign a four-year deal with Liverpool, and will wear the no.6 shirt.

Bayern Munich manager Hans-Dieter Flick has “congratulated” Liverpool on the signing of Thiago Alcantara.

Liverpool have agreed on a £20million deal to sign the Spaniard, with a further £5m in potential add-ons, according to various reports.

Thiago Alcantara – who was available for a cut-price with his contract coming to an end – is expected to sign a four-year deal with Liverpool, and will wear the no.6 shirt.

The midfielder has proved a sensation at Bayern following his 2013 move from Barcelona, winning 16 major trophies – including a historic Champions League triumph in August.

Bayern made no secret of their desire for Thiago to stay, but appear to have reluctantly accepted his exit, with the midfielder making it clear he wanted a new challenge.

Speaking ahead of their Bundesliga opener against Schalke on Friday, Flick revealed he had shared an emotional goodbye with the 29-year-old.

“Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us,” Flick said. “My coaching team and I enjoyed working with him.

“It was very emotional as we said goodbye. I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.

“Thiago gave the team a lot of options and made us unpredictable, he solved things in ways you don’t expect.

“Now we’re losing yet another great player. We are in contact with Hasan [Salihamidzic, sporting director] and we are confident that we can still do something.

“We’re positive and we have the first game tomorrow. That’s the focus now and we have a good squad with which we can win the game.”
