The late Abiola Ajimobi was a senator and former governor of the Oyo State and considered among the most respected statesmen in South-western Nigeria.

The Nigerian public have completely been swept off their feet after images and video footage of the burial site of one of the country’s wealthy politicians hit the internet space.

The late Abiola Ajimobi was a senator and former governor of the Oyo State and considered among the most respected statesmen in South-western Nigeria. He gave up the ghost earlier in June following complications from coronavirus. It is believed that he died as a result of multiple organ failures due to the Covid-19 infection.

A recent video of the burial site of Mr. Abiola making rounds on various social media portal has reignited memories of his death. The video showed the extravagance and display of wealth by the family of the late politician. His grave is fully tiled and airconditioned. Rumors even suggest that gravesite has unlimited internet access.

The wanton display of extravagance seems to baffle many citizens cannot hold but vent their spleen.

Taking to social media one Yedeji Kayode questioned the motive behind such a waste of money, he quizzed, ‘I’m trying to understand the motive. Have they created a relaxation point around his tomb where they connect to his memory and maybe his spirit (if his spirit will ever dwell there)? An inviting tourist spots? Or they think the dead can actually take pleasure in the luxury of the living? If this is just a show of money and wealth, then vanity has no limit as well as the extent the mind of a man can conceive vainglory.’

Olurontimi Anifowose, who seems to be at peace with the development argued on behalf of the family he comments that ‘A family has chosen how they want to honor their patriarch in death and I do not see anything wrong in this. Yes, he was a public figure but we should be mindful that he belonged to a family first. He was buried just his tomb was made up to the taste of his family.’
