An Indian woman has been rescued after spending close to two years in a toilet facility where her husband had locked her.
For the past 18 months, the 35-year-old woman was locked in a 3ft by 3ft lavatory. She was rescued by police and welfare officers in the village of Panipat, a city north of Delhi. The local police have arrested the woman’s husband, Naresh Kumar for his inhumane actions.
Local media report that the mother-of-three was forced to live in animalistic conditions, denied food and water for several days at a time, according to local media. The district’s women’s’ protection officer, Rajni Gupta was tipped off by locals, who alerted police and traveled with them to the latrine, which was on the side of their house.
When the district’s women’s protection officer and the police arrived at the scene, they found the woman lying on the floor of the toilet.
‘She was very weak that she could not even walk,’ Gupta told the Hindustan Times. ‘She ate eight chapattis when she was given the food’.
