A 10-year-old boy died in hospital from a brain injury five days after hitting his head in an accident at his school, an inquest has heard.

Birmingham Coroner’s Court was told that a full inquest into Yasir Hussain’s death will hear evidence from his next of kin and teachers, as well as a summary of accounts from other children.

Dudley-born Yasir, of Ward End, Birmingham, died at the city’s Children’s Hospital on November 17 after hitting his head at Leigh Primary School on November 12.

Flowers were left at the school in tribute as news reached parents last week. One said simply: ‘You have been my friend since reception but now you have gone and left us.’

In a letter sent to parents, the school’s headteacher, Stephanie Prince, paid to tribute to Yasir as ‘quietly confident, hard-working and determined to succeed’.

She said ‘We are all so desperately sad that one of our much-loved pupils has died following a tragic accident.

‘Yasir was quietly confident, hard-working, and determined to succeed. He had a real thirst for learning and he loved playing with his friends. We all desperately miss him already.

‘All our thoughts are with Yasir’s family and friends, and we would respectfully request that their and our privacy is respected at this terribly difficult time.

‘We are providing all support possible to our pupils to help them cope with their loss.’

Miss Prince confirmed a commemoration event would be held for Yasir in the near future.

Opening and adjourning the inquest on Monday, area coroner Emma Brown said: ‘A medical cause of death has been suggested by clinicians at Birmingham Children’s Hospital as traumatic brain injury.

‘In light of the connection between Yasir’s death and an accident, it is necessary for an inquest to be opened and further investigations into the events leading to Yasir’s death are required.’

Ms Brown said a full inquest date would be set at a review hearing on February 18 next year.

It is anticipated the full hearing will examine the circumstances leading to Yasir hitting his head, how and when his condition deteriorated, and his treatment in hospital.

The coroner told the court: ‘Evidence will also be obtained from West Midlands Ambulance Service clinicians with reference to the first call that was made to them and a subsequent call.

‘I do wish to convey my deepest condolences to Yasir’s family at this most awful and tragic of times.’
