Due to the secretive nature of Hollywood accounting, it is not absolutely clear which film is the most expensive film ever made, but, the charts are ordered by budgets officially acknowledged by the production companies.

Most companies will not give a statement on the actual production costs, only estimates by professional researchers and movie industry writers are available.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides officially holds the record most expensive film with a budget of $378.5 million, while The Hobbit trilogy stands as the most expensive back-to-back film production with combined costs of $623 million after-tax credits.

Listed below are the costs of the actual filming, not including promotional costs and after accounting for tax subsidies.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a 2011 American fantasy swashbuckler film, the fourth instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and a standalone sequel to At World’s End (2007).

The film was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and was the first film in the series to be released in the Disney Digital 3-D and IMAX 3D formats.

Filming employed 3D cameras similar to those used in the production of the 2009 film Avatar, and ten companies were involved with the film’s visual effects.

Following inflated production costs which ballooned the net budget to $379 million, the film currently ranks as the most expensive film ever made.

On Stranger Tides broke many box office records and was the third highest-grossing film of 2011 . It is the 38th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide when not adjusting for inflation.

With an estimated net production budget of $365 million, it is the second most expensive film ever made .

The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2015 as well as the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time.

3. Avengers: Endgame

It grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, surpassing Infinity War’s entire theatrical run in just eleven days and breaking numerous box office records, including becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.

It is the fifth instalment in the DC Extended Universe.

The film grossed over $657 million worldwide against a break-even point of $750 million, becoming a box office disappointment and losing Warner Bros. Pictures an estimated $60 million.

9. John Carter

Due to the film’s poor box office performance, Disney cancelled plans for a sequel (titled Gods of Mars) and the trilogy Stanton had planned.

10. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a 2016 American superhero film based on the DC Comics characters -Batman and Superman.

It is a follow-up to Man of Steel (2013) and the second instalment in the DC Extended Universe

Following a strong debut that set new box office records, the film experienced a historic drop in its second weekend and never recovered.

Despite turning a profit, it was deemed a box office disappointment and received generally unfavourable reviews from critics for its tone, screenplay, and pacing, though some praised its visual style and acting performances.
