Chelsea board target German-speaking coach to replace Frank Lampard

2 Mins read

Chelsea’s board are targeting a German-speaking coach as Frank Lampard’s replacement, according to media reports.

Lampard is under increasing pressure to keep his job following Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

Chelsea has now lost five out of their last eight Premier League games and after an encouraging start to the campaign, Lampard’s side now appears to be on course to battle out for a top-four finish once again.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea’s board are assessing their options following the team’s poor run of form under Lampard and there is now a ‘desire’ to pursue a German-speaking manager as the 42-year-old’s successor.

Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hasenhuttl have all been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, while Thomas Tuchel is now out of work after he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in December.

The report claims that Chelsea’s board are considering this approach to help improve the situations of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, who have both failed to make an impact over the winter period.

Havertz was anonymous before being replaced after just 67 minutes in the defeat to Leicester, while Werner was brought on as a second-half substitute with Chelsea chasing the game.

The German striker, signed in a £47.5 million deal from RB Leipzig last summer, has scored just once in his last 15 appearances for Chelsea, and that goal came in a comfortable 4-0 win over Morecambe in the FA Cup.

Asked if the decision to bench Werner for Chelsea’s trip to Leicester was a disappointment, Lampard said, “I wouldn’t use the word disappointment because I have to pick a squad out of the players that I have, and I have to pick a squad that I feel is best one to win the game or I think I would lose credibility.

‘” have to try to do that. Different types of game I’ll pick different players. Timo Werner has started games for us, Hakim Ziyech has started games for us.

“I cannot pick every player in the team. So no, it’s not a disappointment, it’s just my job. It’s my job to pick players that I think can win a game.

“Today, it’s nothing to do with the individual selections, it’s the individuals who are on the pitch didn’t perform to the levels they can do and that’ll lose you games.”
