Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang explains Arsenal absence

1 Mins read

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed the reason he missed Arsenal’s last two matches, saying that his mother has been ill in hospital.

The Gunners striker was left out of Mikel Arteta’s squad for their recent double-header against Southampton, which saw them beaten 1-0 in the FA Cup fourth round at St Mary’s on Saturday before returning to claim a 3-1 win in the Premier League on Tuesday.

And Aubameyang has taken to social media to reveal he has been taking care of his mum, who is now on the mend after suffering with some “health issues”.

“Hey guys,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter.

“My mother is going through some health issues and I had to be there for her. She’s already much better now and I will be back home tonight. I’m more than grateful to the doctors and nurses helping her get through this.

“And of course, thanks to my Arsenal fam for the love yesterday! I’m more determined than ever to keep our momentum going!

“Thank you all again – I really am beyond blessed to receive this level of support and love from all of you and I can’t wait to be back”.

Arsenal fans are hoping Aubameyang will be back in time for their crucial clash with Premier League leaders Manchester United on Saturday.

But before Tuesday’s win at Southampton, Arteta admitted he is unsure when his star striker will be ready to return.

“I don’t know,” the Gunners manager said when asked about a potential return date for Aubameyang.

“The issue is still going. It’s not resolved yet. He needs a little bit of time and we have to respect and support that.”

He then added: “Of course, it will be a problem [if he is out for much longer].

“Because he’s our top striker and the one who’s scored the most goals and our captain, a really important player in the team.

“We have to respect the time. Let’s see. I don’t have enough information right now to see how things are evolving.

“Hopefully they will go in the right direction.”
