A caretaker has allegedly killed a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, over house rent related issues.
It was gathered that the incident happened at one of the off-campus hostels in the school called Ezinwanne Lodge on Tuesday, February 2.
The deceased, Anthony Chinweotito Emmanuel, who was a first-year student of the Department of Building Technology, died in a hospital on Saturday night, February 6.
According to reports, the caretaker whose name is unknown at the time of filing this report, allegedly hit the student with a wood on his stomach.
According to some residents of the hostel, the caretaker had locked up the water supply because some students refused to pay the full house rent.
In their defense, they said they did not live in the hostel between March 2020 and January, 2021 due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
The students later opened the tap and fetched water. When the caretaker came back and saw the tap opened, he was enraged and used a saw to cut open the water pipe.
This led to a dispute between him and the students, during which he allegedly picked up a wood (pictured below) and hit the deceased in his stomach.
It was gathered that the caretaker ran away from the scene of the incident, leaving Anthony in the pool of his blood.
Fellow students rushed him to a nearby hospital but he was rejected. He was later rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where he died on Saturday.
The incident was confirmed by a divisional police officer in charge of Nekede Police Station, who said the caretaker has been arrested and the case would be handed over to the State CID on Monday, for further investigation.
