One person is feared dead after a diesel-laden tanker fell on a stationary towing van at Otto Wharf, along Apapa – Oshodi Expressway, Mile 2, Lagos.
The accident, which happened in the early hours of today, Jan. 15, also left another person injured, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margret Adeseye, said.
Adeseye said it occurred as a result of the barriers introduced by toll collectors in the community.
She said, “The incident, which was reported at 4am, Sunday wee hours, had a 45,000 litres tanker heading towards Oshodi from Apapa where it loaded diesel to full capacity before it was reported to have fallen on a stationed towing van while on motion, negotiating its way out of barriers introduced by nefarious toll collectors.
“The resultant accident was mitigated by the Sari-Iganmu Fire Crew of the agency from resulting in a fire incident,” adding “two male adults were involved as one was rescued alive with injuries (and taken) to the hospital, and the other victim recovered was suspected dead.”
She added that the remains of the tanker and the towing van had been evacuated.

It was gathered that the incident occurred near Tashar Yari in Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State around 3:30 pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
It cannot be ascertained what led to the altercation between the soldier attached to a construction company and the late driver.
Confirming the blockage of the road by the protesting drivers and the killing of the driver, acting Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Lawal Garba said other security agencies had been contacted to help resolve the situation to open the highway for stranded motorists.
“The blockage of the road started after a soldier attached to the construction company working on the road was alleged to have shot a tanker driver following a misunderstanding. The tanker drivers then blocked the road completely in protest,” Garba said.
