British Consul Meets Nnamdi Kanu In DSS Custody

A British Consul, Ms. Heather Wilkie met with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS. Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, said the IPOB leader discussed issues bothering on his health and extrajudicial detention with the British Consul. Ejimakor also said other issues discussed by Kanu and Wilkie can’t be made public. INEC Releases Number of PVCs Collected According To States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the number of Permanent Voter Cards collected according to states. According to INEC, 87,209,007 permanent voter cards (PVC) have been collected across the country so far. Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairperson, announced the development on Thursday during a media briefing at the national collation centre in Abuja. The commission had initially fixed December 12 to January 22 for the PVC collection exercise in all LGAs. The commission then extended the deadline till January 29 and again till February 5. Speaking at the briefing, Yakubu said while the commission is pleased that the rate of collection is higher than in previous years, there are still many PVCs uncollected. According to data distributed to journalists, out of 93,469,008 registered voters in Nigeria, 93.3 percent have collected their PVCs. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-political organization has urged the federal government to demand the extradition of Baifra agitator, Simon Ekpa. This comes after Ekpa was arrested in Finland. Ohanaeze vowed to provide terrorism evidence to prosecute Ekpa. Ohanaeze said providing evidence against Ekpa would serve as a deterrent to those planning violent agitation in the Southeast. Thomas H. Lee, a billionaire financer who helped pioneer the debt-fuelled corporate acquisition known as a leveraged buyout has been found dead. In a statement, Thomas H Lee’s family said they were “extremely saddened” by the 78-year-old’s death. Russia to buy Chinese drones for Ukraine war – Report

Russia is in talks with a Chinese drone maker to supply it with self-explosive drones that could be deployed in Ukraine, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Friday. The magazine said it has seen information indicating that Russia’s military is negotiating with Chinese drone manufacturer Xi’an Bingo Intelligent Aviation Technology to produce such drones for Moscow on a large scale. The Chinese manufacturer, the report said, has agreed to build and test 100 ZT-180 prototype drones before delivering them to Russia by April 2023. Each of the drones is reportedly able to carry between 35 to 50 kilogrammes of explosives. As a further step, Bingo is reportedly planning to send Russia components and know-how for Moscow to manufacture the drones onsite. Cooking gas price rose by 39% in 12 months – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the price of 12.5kg of cooking gas rose from N7,413.25 recorded in January 2022 to N10,277.17 in January 2023, representing a 38.63 percent increase on a year-on-year basis. However, the cost to refill it rose by only 0.28 per cent on a month-on-month basis from N10,248.97 in December 2022 to N10,277.17 in January 2023. State profile analysis showed that Benue recorded the highest average retail price of N11,260.67 for 12.5kg cooking gas, followed by Cross River at N10,833.33 and Ebonyi at N10,763.57. On the other hand, the report showed that the lowest average price for 12.5kg of cooking gas was recorded in Yobe at N9,550.00, followed by Taraba and Gombe at N9,845.00 and N9,850.00. This was contained in the Bureau’s “Cooking Gas Price Watch’’ for January 2023 released on Friday in Abuja. How A 28-Year-Old Man Duped Jobseekers Of N1.2m In Lagos

Ekene Itodo, a 28-year-old man, who is said to have allegedly obtained N1.2m from three people under false pretences of securing jobs for them, has been dragged to court. The man, on Thursday appeared at an Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Itodo is standing trial on five counts bordering on conspiracy, fraud and breach of peace. He, however, pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendant and one person currently at large committed the offences on January 30 and February 6, 2023, on Ayerowi Street, Igando, Lagos. According to him, the defendant fraudulently obtained N550,000 from one Mr Benedict Okon; N500, 000 from one Mr Sampon Sunday and N170,000 from one Felix Musa. He said the defendant obtained a total of N1.2m from the complainants in the guise of getting jobs for them. 40-Year-Old Unemployed Man Defiles 15-Year-Old Girl

A 40-year-old unemployed man, George Ukpong, has been jailed in Lagos. An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on Thursday remanded the man in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, who did not take the plea of Ukpong, ordered that the case file should be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. Kubeinje adjourned the case till March 22 for DPP advice. Earlier, the prosecution counsel, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that Ukpong committed the offence on February 19 at Jaiye Oba Street, Shasha, Lagos. Ajayi said Ukpong lured the girl into his room and defiled her. He said that the defendant was caught by some neighbours. Ajayi said the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. NAN reports that the section stipulates life imprisonment if found guilty.
