Assembly Election 2023: Voter apathy mars Imo polls

There is voter apathy in Imo State as residents vote in the ongoing House of Assembly elections in the state. This is even as the late arrival of the staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission and electoral materials have undermined the integrity of the process. Our correspondent who is monitoring the exercise observed that prospective voters are dissatisfied with the absence of INEC officials at polling stations. At booths 008, 009 and 020 in the Ihiagwa Community in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, our correspondent saw no INEC staff as some people waited to vote. One of the voters, Obinna Unegbu, expressed dissatisfaction that officials of INEC had yet to arrive at his booth 008 and 009 as of 10 am. He said he and his people would wait to vote even if it took INEC till 10 pm to show up. At booth 020, a community leader, Emeka Udokporo, said that he was worried that INEC staff had yet to arrive at the station as of 10:3am. He advised INEC to ensure that

Dead people on voter register caused low turnout, says APC chieftain

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Remmy Hazzan, has expressed displeasure over the voter register used by the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct the 2023 general election. Hazzan, who is also the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Public Communications lamented that the names of registered voters on INEC were full of dead people yet to be taken off the lists. He said this shortly after casting his vote at polling unit six, ward 14 in the Omu area of Odogbolu Local Government, Ogun State. He noted that INEC was building on the 1999 register, stressing that the commission should reprocess the entire voters’ registration. Hazzan, however, insisted that the failure of INEC to remove names of dead people from the list contributed to reported voter apathy. He said, “In this election and in this particular unit, we have the highest number of turnout, but if you check in relation with the voters’ register, you will see that there is voter

Our correspondent further observed that following the attack, voter turnout in the area dropped rapidly as many people went back to their homes for fear of being attacked. A resident of the area, who was attacked and flogged by the hoodlums with blood dripping down his head said he was intimidated while trying to cast his vote. Speaking to our correspondent on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment, he said, “I was trying to cast my vote when the thugs invaded my polling unit. They said I can’t vote if I’m not voting for the APC [All Progressives Congress]. They started flogging me and beating me.” It was gathered that the hoodlums were made up of both male and female members and they were about 20 in number

Assembly Election 2023: Low turnout mars election in Anambra

Low turnout has marred the state House of Assembly polls as most people stayed away from polling centres. It was a total departure from the large turnout that was witnessed during the presidential and national assembly polls on February 25. In most of the polling centres visited in Onitsha, few voters were seen waiting patiently for the arrival of electoral materials and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission. In Awka, the state capital, it was near empty polling units as staff of the INEC, who were on the ground, sat idly. At Aroma junction 1, Polling Unit 008, Awka South Local Government Area, at 11:20 am, only six persons have been able to vote, despite the commencement of voting at 8:30 am and the swiftness of the BVAS machines. A voter, Mrs Chika Ndu, told our correspondent, “People are not coming out because they felt their votes may not count because of what happened last three weeks. “It will take a level of enlightenment for people to accept to come out bec

Raise VAT From 7.5% to 10% – Finance Minister Urges Incoming Government

The incomng government has been urged to raise the Value Added Tax, VAT from 7.7% to 10%. Zainab Ahmed made the call during a courtesy visit to the headquarters of VON in Abuja. Ahmed said: “VAT was one of the ways to increase revenue and we still have to increase VAT because at 7.5 per cent, Nigeria has the lowest VAT rate in the world, not in Africa, in the world. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the Africa average is 18 per cent, when you increase your VAT, your Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will grow.” She noted that the government had used the finance bills to block leakages, and strengthen the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigeria Customs Service adding that the government has also done automation of the two institutions through the process.

Ronaldo included in Portugal squad for Euro qualifiers

Cristiano Ronaldo was on Friday included in the first Portugal squad announced by new coach, Roberto Martinez, for Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. The 38-year-old “is very important for the team,” the Spanish coach stressed during a press conference in which he unveiled his squad of 26. “I do not look at the age,” said Martinez. Portugal will face Liechtenstein on March 23 in Lisbon before travelling to Luxembourg on March 26. Martinez said his first squad “is important because it is the starting point” for Euro 2024. Ronaldo, whose international career began in August 2003 in a friendly against Kazakhstan, holds the world record for men’s international goals with 118. History suggests that, if he returns to the starting line-up, he will boost his total in the next two matches, at least against Luxembourg. Portugal have played Liechtenstein seven times, winning six and drawing one, a World Cup qualifier in 2004 which Ronaldo started but did not finish
