Man City humble Liverpool, close point on Arsenal

Manchester City coped without the injured Erling Haaland to keep the Premier League title race alive by coming from behind to thrash Liverpool 4-1 on Saturday. Goals from Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish moved the defending champions back to within five points of Arsenal at the top of the table. City and Liverpool have finished as the top two in four of the past five Premier League seasons, but the Reds are struggling just to qualify for the Champions League after a dreadful campaign and were given another lesson in the gap they have to bridge to be back challenging next season. A chastening defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp’s men still seven points adrift of the top four down in sixth. A groin injury meant Haaland was watching on from the stands alongside his father and former City midfielder Alfie Haaland. Despite the absence of their 42-goal striker, Pep Guardiola’s men made a positive start as Alisson Becker was forced into saves from Gundogan and Rodri be

Following his historic indictment on criminal charges, Donald Trump was preparing Friday to go where no former US president has gone before – a prosecutor’s office to be booked, fingerprinted and have his mugshot taken. Trump’s pending arrest, expected on Tuesday, throws a political grenade into the 2024 presidential race, in which the 76-year-old real estate tycoon is hoping to return to the White House. Pressed by reporters on Friday, President Joe Biden repeatedly declined to address the fate of the Republican candidate he defeated in the 2020 election and could potentially face again in November of next year. “I have no comment on Trump,” Biden said. A New York grand jury indicted Trump on Thursday over a $130,000 hush-money payment made to a porn star to buy her silence during his 2016 campaign. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and accused the Manhattan district attorney who brought the charges, Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, of waging a “political witch-hunt” to derail his new White Hou

Arrest interim government agitators, APC govs tell DSS

The Progressive Governors Forum has openly condemned the calls for the return of interim government, stressing that any self-serving Nigerian found culpable in the act of sabotage should be prosecuted. Their concerns were raised in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the PGF Chairman, Atiku Bagudu. The condemnation is coming in the wake of the alarm raised by the Department of State Services that it had uncovered a plot by some Nigerians to thwart the May 29 inauguration of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The news also prompted the presidential campaign councils of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party to challenge the DSS to get tough with plotters of the interim national government. The councils, in separate interviews with The PUNCH on Wednesday in Abuja, said the push for the ING was unconstitutional, adding that the plotters should be arrested. It was on the same basis that the APC governors led by Bagudu believed that the secret police have

I will stay with Mercedes till ‘last days’ – Hamilton

Seven-time world champion race car driver, Lewis Hamilton, on Thursday emphatically put to bed any concerns that he wanted to leave Mercedes, saying he planned to be the team “till my last days”. The Briton’s disappointment after the season-opening grand prix in Bahrain, where he finished a distant fifth in his under-performing W14 car, led to claims that he was set to seek a move elsewhere. He insisted that was not the case after a more competitive race in Saudi Arabia a fortnight ago. And to make it crystal clear, the 38-year-old said ahead of the Australian Grand Prix that he wanted to finish his career with the once all-conquering Silver Arrows. “I feel amazing about it (the future), I continue to feel very, very much at home, it’s a family,” he said in Melbourne of remaining with a team that has been his home for a decade. “I see myself being with Mercedes till my last days. “If you look at the legends, Sir Stirling Moss was with Mercedes till the end of his days, and that’s been

Whitemoney and his reckless counsel to ‘brothers’

The video recently posted by Hazel Onuo, also known as “Whitemoney,” is a most upsetting and parochial portrayal of Nigerian women. In this video, the winner of Big Brother Naija ‘Shine Ya Eye’ Season 6 painted women as merchandise who answer to money without question. He later clarified that he directed the post at men, and their need to make money, but he still came across as suggesting that every woman has a price. In addition, saying, “No woman is out of your league, bro, just make money and create your own game, they’re gonna play,” only encouraged brothers to make money, without a hint as to the how? This is also unhelpful if not dangerous. This is a point that I will return to shortly. Onuo’s comments raised a huge row. Many women in the entertainment sphere took him on for the reckless comment, and before long, issues degenerated into name-calling and worse. But the guy wasn’t done. A few days later, he spoke with artiste Chinedu Emmanuel, otherwise known as Nedu. The latter, h
