There is a psychological after-effect of 'living heads down' that we all must be wary of. That it teaches one to be reclusive, shuts you out from real-time social activity, et al.For some of us who may be wondering what I mean by 'living heads down' , here's what I mean: to live heads down is to have your face, mind always buried inside your phone, or mobile device, being overly attached to using phones that you forget there's a world right before you that demands your attention and requires your active participation. There are five important ways living “heads down” is bad for our youth.1. Safety. This is the obvious one. Anyone who does any driving anywhere has seen someone lost in their phone walk out into traffic — or worse, drive with their attention on their phone. We look down as we walk along a hallway or sidewalk and collide into others doing the same, or into doors, or poles, or other hazards. The university my daughter and I were visiting is an urban one, adding a whole other layer of danger: being aware of one’s surroundings is hard when you are looking at your device.2. Health. Our devices tend to make us more sedentary. Too often, our kids are happy to curl up with their phones, their tablets, their computers, or their video games instead of being active. Kids should be active for an hour a day to be healthy, and devices get in the way of that. Since using devices is generally an indoor thing, kids also lose out on being outdoors, in the sunshine, which impacts health. Devices also get in the way of sleep. More and more, especially with teens, cell phones keep kids awake — and wake them up during the night. All of these factors could have both short- and long-term effects on health.3. Anxiety. There is growing concern that social media fuels anxiety in our youth. Too often, youth feel measured by how many people click on or “like” their posts. They can feel like their lives pale in comparison to the lives of peers that look so successful and happy on social media. In so many ways, social media can make youth worry and feel inadequate.4. Social connections. Not only do kids not notice people around them when they are on their devices, it’s becoming more common for kids to be on their phones even in social situations — rather than talking or otherwise interacting. Kids are at risk of losing the important social skills of making conversation and building relationships, and losing these skills could have lifelong implications.5. Losing connection with the physical world. It’s not just about avoiding bumping into people or not learning how to make small talk. There is a bigger problem when people experience the world through devices. They miss out on experiencing the natural world and on all the hands-on experiences and skills the physical world provides. There is much that devices can offer in terms of connection and information, so many ways they can make our lives streamlined and more efficient. But we owe it to our children to be sure that they live their lives in a “heads-up” way: fully engaged with everyone and everything around them.

What You Didn’t Know About Eating Corn; The yes Will Pleasantly Surprise YouCorn is one of the most popular cereal grains in the world. Corn or maize is a grain plant that originated in southern Mexico. The kernels or seeds of corn hold the majority of its nutrients and are the most commonly consumed parts. They come in multiple colors, depending on where the it is grown and what species or variety they happen to be. Another genetic variant, called sweetcorn, has more sugar and less starch in the nutritive material.Corn on the cob, the delicious treat has a distinct earthiness to its taste. It is the healthiest form of a nourishing snack, especially when roasted on flames or boiled; it has a different taste each time. The setting on the actual cob is pearl like, like someone took the time to wrap a garland of pearls around it. It is often said that you first eat with your eyes. What this really means is that much of the snack you much on every day is because you may see somebody else doing the same or glance at various restaurants and fast food joints when you’re on your way to work or home.Corns are a treat to look at and cooking it on open fires, family barbeques or boiling is also a fantastic experience. Studies show that corn maize is the source of food for many people and livestock. It is also the most harvested grain as compared to others. Corn is not only eaten directly, but is also used in many different ways like in tortillas, cornflakes, corn flour and corn syrup. This is a diverse grain. It is low in calories and contains almost 3.4 grams of protein per 100 grams of serving. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals, and is an excellent source of energy. The widespread use of corn in food products has led to debate about whether corn is healthful. However, corn has nutritional benefits, and there is no evidence that it is harmful to health. Consuming food that is nutritious and low in calories will surely have its benefits. Corn is one of those foods that you don’t regret eating. In light of this, here are 10 health benefits;Promotes Growth Corn is rich in vitamin B constituents, especially thiamin and niacin. Thiamin is essential for maintaining nerve health and cognitive function. Niacin deficiency leads to pellagra; a disease characterized by diarrhea, dementia, and dermatitis that is commonly observed in malnourished individuals. It is also a good source of pantothenic acid, which is an essential vitamin for carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism in the body.Weight Loss Often trying to lose weight becomes a burden as we tend to believe that starvation will help us, or not catering to bouts of hunger and craving will diminish those extra inches. However, this is not true; to lose weight eating the right kind of nutrient rich foods is necessary. Corn is the best snack for this, it is a source of energy and will also leave you feeling full for longer due to its fiber content. Popped corn without any salt, cooked with a tablespoon of coconut oil is the way to go.Provides Essential Minerals Corn contains abundant minerals which positively benefit the body in a number of ways. Phosphorus, along with magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, and copper are some of the essential nutrients that are found in all varieties of corn. It also contains trace minerals like selenium, which are difficult to find in most normal diets. Phosphorus is essential for regulating normal growth, bone health, and optimal kidney functioning. Magnesium is necessary for maintaining a normal heart rate and for increasing bone mineral density.Prevents Hypertension It contains phenolic phytochemicals that help regulate blood pressure and prevent hypertension. There is also a good amount of vitamin B that is beneficial for the optimal functionality of your adrenal glands.Prevents Anemia Corn helps prevent anemia caused by a deficiency of vitamins and minerals. It also contains iron, which is one of the essential minerals needed to form new red blood cells; a deficiency of iron is one of the main causes of anemia as well. Studies have also been conducted connecting Vitamin A and beta carotene with increased absorption of iron.Eye & Skin Care Yellow corn is a rich source of beta-carotene, which forms vitamin A in the body and is essential for the maintenance of good vision and skin. As per a study published in the Science journal, beta-carotene is a great source of vitamin A because it is converted into the body according to the amount required. Vitamin A can be toxic if too much is consumed, so deriving it through beta-carotene transformation is ideal. It will also benefit the health of skin and mucous membranes, as well as boost the immune system.Diabetes Management It has been observed to help non-insulin dependent diabetes. The organic kind is the best as it retains most of its nutrients and is free of harmful elements such as pesticides. The regular consumption of corn provides energy to people suffering with diabetes without spiking blood sugar levels too much.Cosmetic Benefits Cornstarch is used in the manufacturing of many cosmetic products and may also be applied topically to soothe skin rashes and irritation. Its products can be used to replace carcinogenic petroleum products which are major components of many cosmetic preparations. Many of the traditional skin creams contain petroleum jelly as a base material, which can often block pores and make skin conditions even worse.Cancer Prevention It is true that an antioxidant rich diet will help prevent cancer. There are many studies that show that antioxidants fight free radicals cells and prevent oxidative damage to the body. Sweet corn when cooked is observed to have more antioxidants than non-cooked corn. Corn contains carotenoid antioxidants that are proven to protect the eyes and skin from oxidative damage. Popped corn can be a good way to get those antioxidants in.Helpful during Pregnancy It has a number of benefits during pregnancy for both mother and the baby. Corn is rich in folic acid, and contains zeaxanthin and pathogenic acid which reduces the risk of birth defects in baby. It can protect the baby from muscular degeneration and physiological problems. Due to its high fiber content, it also soothes constipation, which is a very common concern for expecting mothers.
Young athlete doing outdoor workout.Life in Nigeria is trying to reduce your lifespan! If you live here then you know exactly what I’m talking about, the stress alone is enough to end you. One thing does stand out right now is the heat. There’s just no escaping the current heatwave, but you can’t let that stand in the way of your fitness. What are the considerations for exercising in searing heat? If your hot-weather workout makes you feel like you are burning more fat, that’s because you are. Although colder temperatures might make it seem like your body needs to work harder to warm itself, your body actually burns more energy in the heat. Working out in the heat comes with a higher fat burn, but it also comes with several dangers. Working out in hot temperature burns more fat, and calories because your body has to work harder to cool itself. Your body releases heat through sweat, which comes from blood pumped to your skin. The hotter your body gets, the more blood your heart needs to pump to expel that heat. Thus your heart works harder in hotter temperatures than it would in cooler temperatures, providing an increased calorie and fat burn. If, like me, you like working out outdoors, here are some tips to making the most of the hot weather:Drink UpThe body’s natural cooling system can fail if we’re exposed to soaring temperatures for too long. The result may be heat exhaustion, that awful fatigue that makes you feel as if one more step could be your last, and even heat stroke. If the humidity is also really high, you’re in double trouble because your sweat “sticks” to your skin; it doesn’t evaporate as readily, which can send body temperature even higher. To keep cool, make sure first of all that you’re drinking plenty of water. Since our bodies are about 50 to 60% water, it is vital to maintain this amount. We tend to lose about 2 to 3% during typical exercise and activity, especially on really hot days. While you’re exercising, drink 8 to 10 ounces of water every 20 minutes. After exercise, drink more – at minimum, another 8 ounces. Another great way to help re-hydrate during a break in physical activity is to eat a piece of fruit, such as an apple or orange, or even carrots or celery sticks. This will also help replace valuable electrolyte loss. How do I know if I’m drinking enough water?A good way to know that you’re hydrating properly is by checking the colour of your urine. If it’s pale yellow (think lemonade), you’re well hydrated. If it’s darker (heading toward the colour of apple juice), drink more. Do be aware that some medications and supplements alter the colour of urine, so this gauge, while good for many, does not work for everyone. To be safe, do drink the recommended amount of water. However, be careful not to drink too much water, this is called overhydration. It can lead to a problem called hyponatremia (low blood sodium).Steer clear of sports drinks. They’re loaded with calories.Sports drinks are not worth the caloric weight. They should only be considered if you’re of ideal body weight and exercising for long durations at high intensities. Even then, it’s a good idea to dilute sport drinks to avoid excessive calorie consumption. Eating fruits and vegetables during exercise provides ample electrolytes for the body, even further decreasing the need for high-calorie sport drinks.Ease UpIf you’re used to working out in cooler climates, take it easy at first. Just accept the fact that you can’t do what you normally do. If you normally run, jog or walk. If you’re a brisk walker, slow it down. As your body adapts to the heat, gradually increase the pace and length of your workout. If you have a medical condition and/or take prescription medications, do ask your physician if you need to take any additional precautions. Do not assume just because you are African that your body is designed for it, coming from a cooler climate requires the same precautions. Don’t find out the hard way.Avoid The Hottest Part Of The DayRise early to catch the cool of the morning, or go out at sunset or later. In the heat of midday, take cover under shade. Jump in a pool. Sign up for an aqua-aerobics class.Wear Light-Coloured, Lightweight ClothingDark colors absorb the heat, which can make you feel as if you’re wrapped in a warm blanket. Heavyweight, tight-fitting clothing will also heat you up. Keep it loose. Keep it light. More air will be able to circulate over your skin, keeping you cool. Personally, I’m a Dry-Fit fan.Eat Snacks To Maintain EnergyBut pick juicy snacks like fruit. The last thing you need in scorching heat are dry snacks like crackers, popcorn, or energy bars that require your body to add water. Plus, dry snacks are often dense with calories, which mean they can easily foil weight-loss goals.Know When To QuitIt’s upsetting not to finish your four-mile workout, but please listen to your body. If you’re feeling any of the following, find air-conditioned comfort fast: weakness, light-headedness, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, rapid heartbeatRemember that even a 20-minute workout has positive health effects. It’s the number of days you exercise that matters most. Frequency of days far outweighs the amount of time of any given exercise session. The most important aspects are to be consistent and to push yourself. Don’t let hot weather become another excuse for skipping a workout session.

WHATS KILLING YOUR KIDNEY? A Ghanaian doctor in the United States sent this to help everyone. Please read and take care of yourself. The speed at which young people suffer from kidney disease is alarming. ★SO HERE ARE THE 6 MAIN CAUSES OF KIDNEY DISEASE: 1. Delay going to the bathroom. Keeping your urine in your bladder too long is a bad idea. A full bladder can cause bladder damage. The urine left in the bladder multiplies the bacteria quickly. Once the urine returns to the ureter and kidneys, toxic substances can lead to kidney infections, then urinary infections, then nephritis and even uremia. When nature calls - do it as soon as possible. 2. Eat too much salt. You should not eat more than 5.8 grams of salt a day. 3. Eat too much meat. Too much protein in your diet is harmful to your kidneys. Protein digestion produces ammonia, a very destructive toxin for the kidneys. More meat equals more kidney damage. 4. Drink too much caffeine. Caffeine is a component of many sodas and soft drinks. This increases your blood pressure and your kidneys begin to suffer. So you should reduce the amount of coke you drink every day. 5.Drink enough warm water. Our kidneys must be well hydrated to perform their duties well. If we do not drink enough, the toxins can begin to accumulate in the blood because there is not enough fluid to drain them through the kidneys. Drink more than 10 glasses of water a day. There is an easy way to check if you're drinking enough water: look at the color of your urine; the lighter the color, the better. 6. Late treatment. After Reading This, You Will Start Eating Cabbage Everyday; You Won’t Believe Some Of Its End ResultsCabbage is one of the most nutritious foods out there, but it’s still often neglected and overlooked by people. They usually appear to be lettuce, even though like broccoli and cauliflower, they belong to the brassica genus family of vegetables. They have been around for years and years, and appear in a variety of shapes and sizes. Cabbages also have different colors; including white, red, purple, and green. They can also be added to all kinds of dishes to make for an even more delicious and nutritious meal. Here are some more interesting reasons to eat more cabbages.IT’S HIGH IN NUTRIENTSEven though cabbage is very low in calories, it has an impressive nutrient profile. Cabbage also contains small amounts of other micronutrients, including vitamin A, iron and riboflavin. It is rich in vitamin B6 and folate, both of which are essential for many important processes in the body, including energy metabolism and the normal functioning of the nervous system. In addition, cabbage is high in fiber and contains powerful antioxidants, including polyphenols and sulfur compounds. Antioxidants protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that have an odd number of electrons, making them unstable. When their levels become too high, they can damage your cells. Cabbage is especially high in vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that may protect against heart disease, certain cancers and vision loss.RICH SOURCE OF VITAMIN CVitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that serves many important roles in the body. For instance, it’s needed to make collagen, the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen gives structure and flexibility to the skin and is critical for the proper functioning of the bones, muscles and blood vessels. Additionally, vitamin C helps the body absorb non-heme iron, the type of iron found in plant foods. What’s more, it’s a powerful antioxidant. In fact, it has been extensively researched for its potential cancer-fighting qualities.Vitamin C works to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals, which has been associated with many chronic diseases, including cancer. Evidence suggests that a diet high in vitamin-C-rich foods is associated with a lower risk of certain cancers. In fact, a recent analysis of 21 studies found that the risk of lung cancer decreased by 7% for each daily 100-mg increase in vitamin C intake. However, this study was limited because it could not determine whether the decreased risk of lung cancer was caused by vitamin C or other compounds found in fruits and vegetables. While many observational studies have found a link between higher vitamin C intake and a reduced risk of certain cancers, results from controlled studies remain inconsistent. Even though more research is needed to determine this vitamin’s role in cancer prevention, it’s certain that vitamin C plays a key role in many important functions in the body. While both green and red cabbages are excellent sources of this potent antioxidant, red cabbage contains about 30% more. One cup (89 grams) of chopped red cabbage packs in 85% of the recommended intake for vitamin C, which is the same amount found in a small orange.IT AIDS DIGESTIONIf you want to improve your digestive health, fiber-rich cabbage is the way to go. This crunchy vegetable is full of gut-friendly insoluble fiber, a type of carbohydrate that can’t be broken down in the intestines. Insoluble fiber helps keep the digestive system healthy by adding bulk to stools and promoting regular bowel movements. What’s more, it’s rich in soluble fiber, which has been shown to increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This is because fiber is the main fuel source for friendly species like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. These bacteria perform important functions like protecting the immune system and producing critical nutrients like vitamins K2 and B12. Eating more cabbage is an excellent way to keep your digestive system healthy and happy.IT IS GOOD FOR A HEALTHY HEARTRed cabbage contains powerful compounds called anthocyanins. They give this delicious vegetable its vibrant purple color. Anthocyanins are plant pigments that belong to the flavonoid family. Many studies have found a link between eating foods rich in this pigment and a reduced risk of heart disease.IT CAN REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURECabbage contains electrolyte that the body needs to function properly. One of its main jobs is to help regulate blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium in the body. Potassium helps excrete excess sodium through urine. It also relaxes blood vessel walls, which lowers blood pressure. While both sodium and potassium are important for health, modern diets tend to be too high in sodium and too low in potassium. Red cabbage is an excellent source of potassium, delivering 12% of the RDI in a 2-cup (178-gram) serving. Eating more potassium-rich cabbage is a delicious way to lower high blood pressure and may help keep it within a healthy range.EASY TO ADD TO YOUR DIETIn addition to being super healthy, cabbage is delicious. It can be eaten raw or cooked and added to a wide variety of dishes like salads, soups, stews and slaws. In addition to being adaptable to many recipes, cabbage is extremely affordable. No matter how you prepare cabbage, adding this cruciferous vegetable to your plate is a tasty way to benefit your health.Source: El Crema

Governor Abiola AjimobiThe Oyo State Health Insurance Agency has introduced barter and daily payment system to ensure operators in the informal sector benefit from its Scheme.Dr Sola Akande, the Executive Secretary of the agency, made the disclosure on Tuesday at a town hall meeting held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan.Recall that the state government had on May 26, 2017, flagged off the scheme.Gov. Abiola Ajimobi had during the flag off of the scheme described it as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving and promoting the socio-economic well-being of the citizenry.Akande said that the newly evolved arrangements were aimed at bringing on board artisans and traders in the state to benefit from the insurance scheme. He said that the new arrangement involved trade by barter and daily payments of as low as N50.Akande said that the arrangement also allows traders to swap their products of equal monetary worth for coverage under the scheme.“We have all kinds of innovations to ensure people get into the scheme, commencing with daily payments like daily contributions and trade by barter among others.“These arrangements are, especially for our rural people. You can bring in palm oil that we will value it, take it to the marketing unit, then they will sell it and we’ll get the money.“We want to look for all possible means to make this convenient for the people. It’s not that the people don’t have money they spend every day.“We are going to help them by going to their markets and their shops. You can’t expect a woman selling vegetables to go to the bank and deposit money for health insurance.“If they do a daily contribution of N50, they will make up their N8,000 payment in four months, and then they begin to enjoy the scheme,’’ he said.Akande said that the scheme had already captured civil servants in the state, adding bringing on board the informal sector was next.“ Information is power. It’s not that people don’t want health insurance. We have reached out to people in Iseyin and Oyo. We’re starting another one at Ibarapa axis tomorrow, ’’ he said.
11:39AM03'HEALTHFrequent urination at night may be a sign of hypertension – StudyPublishedA team of researchers in a new study presented at the 83rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society has said frequent urination in the night, called nocturia, may be linked to hypertension and high salt intake.Nocturia is a condition in which people wake up during the night because they need to urinate. Common causes of frequent trips to the toilet at night include high fluid intake, sleep disorders, and bladder obstruction.According to medicalnewstoday.comnocturia may also be a sign of other health conditions, including bladder prolapse, a tumor of the bladder or prostate and other disorders affecting sphincter control. Pregnant women and people with heart or liver failure and diabetes may also experience nocturia. The study author, Dr Satoshi Konno, said, “Our study indicates that if you need to urinate in the night – called nocturia – you may have elevated blood pressure and/or excess fluid in your body.”The researchers enrolled 3,749 residents of the town of Watari who had undergone an annual health check in 2017 and gathered information about their blood pressure levels and nocturia using questionnaires. The data showed that getting up in the night to urinate was associated with a 40 per cent greater chance of having high blood pressure, and the risk of hypertension rose significantly as the number of nocturia events per night increased.Konno added that the results did not prove a causal relationship between nocturia and hypertension, and might not apply to people who lived outside Japan.“The relationship may be influenced by various factors including lifestyle, salt intake, ethnicity and genetic background,” Konno said. The conference’s press coordinator, Dr Mutsuo Harada, said early detection and management of hypertension was crucial to prevent heart disease.“It is important to research and understand the cause of nocturia in patients because this disorder can not only result from urinary organ problems; it may also be caused by diseases such as hypertension,” Harada said. The President of the European Society of Cardiology, Barbara Casadei, noted that more than one billion people had high blood pressure, worldwide. He said high blood pressure was the leading global cause of premature death, accounting for almost 10 million deaths in 2015
Meet Graham. He might look a little different, but I assure you that he’s human. Well, sort of. The reason he looks this way is that he has plenty of body modifications that makes him able to survive a serious car crash.Graham, the crash test man, was created as part of a new Australian road safety campaign by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). He was designed by sculptor Patricia Piccinini, a leading trauma surgeon, and a road safety engineer, who modified him based on their knowledge of car accidents. The result isn’t a pretty sight, but it’s certainly a sobering one. As you can see, Graham doesn’t have a neck because these snap easily in car accidents. He also has a flat, fleshy face to protect his ears and nose. Also, if you’re wondering about all those extra nipples, they’re to protect his ribs like a natural set of airbags. All these modifications are needed for a human body to survive a car crash.Though Graham was not used in any real car crash tests, you might want to consider slowing down behind the wheel next time.More info: Meetgraham.com | TAC | Patricia Piccinini (h/t)Meet Graham. He might look different but I assure you that he’s humanThe reason he looks the way he does is because his body has been modified to withstand a car crashGraham was created as part of a new Australian road safety campaignHe was designed by sculptor Patricia Piccinini, a leading trauma surgeon, and a road safety engineerHe has multiple nipples to protect his ribs like a natural set of airbagsGraham’s brain is the same as yours, but his skull is bigger with more fluid and more ligaments to support the brain when a collision occursThe brain is one of the most vulnerable parts of our body. It sits delicately surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid, which acts as an inbuilt safety mechanism to protect the brain from day-to-day knocks and jolts.Graham has a rather flat face and a lot of fatty tissue to absorb the energy of an impactOur faces are a delicate mix of bone, muscle, and cartilage. Many people injured in car accidents receive fractures to their nose, damaging not only the bone but disrupting sinuses and the delicate parts behind the cheekbone. To combat this, Graham has a rather flat face. His nose is reduced and his ears are protected by the larger structure of his skull and neckGraham has been designed with airbag-like ribs with sacks that do a similar job to that of an airbagCar seat belts are designed to use the strength of the ribs to help us withstand the forces of a crash. That’s why the three-point seatbelt rests across your ribs and sternum and across your pelvis. It loads the center of your chest, spreading the force over the ribcage until the ribs break when the force becomes too great.Graham’s skull is a lot bigger, it’s almost helmet-like and it’s got these inbuilt crumple zones that would absorb the energy on impactThe skull absorbs a lot of force on impact simply by fracturing. Essentially this stops the force from carrying through to the brain in much the same way a helmet works. Graham’s skull has been engineered to absorb more of the impact earlier, much like a helmet.Graham’s knees have movement in all directions so they are less likely to be injuredWhen a pedestrian is hit by a car it’s usually when they’re stepping out from a curb. On impact, the immediate problem is that the knee is only built to bend in one direction, so it will almost always break first. Depending on the force of the impact, the tendons can also pull, twist and hyperextend well beyond their intended radius.Graham’s neck is fortified with a brace-like structure that protects his head from injury when there is a sudden movementThere is not enough strength in the neck to stop the head from jolting forward in a crash. The forward motion causes a hyperflexion injury and the backward motion a hyperextension injury. Simply put, the neck is placed under more pressure than its structure can manage. The added danger is the spinal cord running through the neck. If it is to bend and stretch too much it will break, causing serious injuries like paraplegia or quadriplegia.Graham has thicker and tougher skin to shield and reduce abrasions and road rashA pedestrian impact is mostly blunt force trauma. However, if our bodies are pitched to the road or if broken glass is involved, then cuts and abrasions can occur. Skin is vulnerable to the road, with bitumen potentially wearing through clothing. This is even more important for motorcyclists and cyclists, who only have minimal protection between themselves and the road.Strong, hoof-like legs with added joints allow him to jump out of the way quickly in a “spring-loaded” fashionFor pedestrian crashes, there are now so many variables that affect injury severity – the size of the vehicle, height, speed and angle of impact. And there are many situations where legs are badly damaged. In fact, injuries to the legs, feet, and ankles can cause long-term debilitation because we are so reliant on them for everyday movement. The shin itself is the least protected bone in the body, with only a thin layer of skin covering it.Watch the video below for more info:
Hey, sleepyheads. What you believe about sleep may be nothing but a pipe dream. Many of us have notions about sleep that have little basis in fact and may even be harmful to our health, according to researchers at NYU Langone Health's School of Medicine, who conducted a study published Tuesday in the journal Sleep Health."There's such a link between good sleep and our waking success," said lead study investigator Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health. "And yet we often find ourselves debunking myths, whether it's to news outlets, friends, family or a patient."CNN Parallels: SleepRobbins and her colleagues combed through 8,000 websites to discover what we thought we knew about healthy sleep habits and then presented those beliefs to a hand-picked team of sleep medicine experts. They determined which were myths and then ranked them by degree of falsehood and importance to health. Here are 10 very wrong, unhealthy assumptions we often make about sleep, an act in which we spend an estimated third of our lives -- or, if we lived to 100, about 12,227 combined days.Stop yawning. It's time to put these unsound sleep myths to bed.1. Adults need five or fewer hours of sleep"If you wanted to have the ability to function at your best during the day, not to be sick, to be mentally strong, to be able to have the lifestyle that you would enjoy, how many hours do you have to sleep?" asked senior study investigator Girardin Jean-Louis, a professor in the Department of Population Health."It turns out a lot of people felt less than five hours of sleep a night was just fine," he said. "That's the most problematic assumption we found."Can poor sleep lead to Alzheimer's or dementia? We're supposed to get between seven and 10 hours of sleep each night, depending on our age, but the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a third of Americans sleep fewer than seven hours a night. According to World Sleep Day statistics, sleep deprivation is threatening the health of up to 45% of the global population."We have extensive evidence to show that sleeping five hours a night or less, consistently, increases your risk greatly for adverse health consequences, including cardiovascular disease and early mortality," Robbins said.In a longitudinal study of 10,308 British civil servants published in 2007, researchers found that those who reduced their sleep from seven to five hours or fewer a night were almost twice as likely to die from all causes, especially cardiovascular disease.Science has also linked poor slumber with high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, weight gain, a lack of libido, mood swings, paranoia, depression and a higher risk of diabetes, stroke, dementia and some cancers.2. It's healthy to be able to fall asleep 'anywhere, anytime'Falling asleep as soon as the car/train/airplane starts moving is not a sign of a well-rested person, sleep experts say. In fact, it's just the opposite."Falling asleep instantly anywhere, anytime, is a sign that you are not getting enough sleep and you're falling into 'micro sleeps' or mini-sleep episodes," Robbins said. 'It means your body is so exhausted that whenever it has a moment, it's going to start to repay its sleep debt."Poor sleep linked to buildup of dangerous plaques throughout body, study saysYou feel sleepy because of a buildup of a chemical called adenosine in the brain, which happens throughout the day as you head toward night. Sleeping soundly reduces that chemical so that when you wake up, the levels are at their lowest, and you feel refreshed. But the longer you stay awake and the less sleep you get, the more your adenosine levels rise, creating what's called a sleep load or sleep debt.Want to check your level of sleepiness? Look at the Epworth sleepiness scale, and if you're worried, check in with a sleep doctor who can do more extensive testing in a sleep lab.3. Your brain and body can adapt to less sleepPeople also believed that the brain and body could adapt and learn to function optimally with less sleep. That too is a myth, experts say. That's because your body cycles through four distinct phases of sleep to fully restore itself. In stage one, you start to lightly sleep, and you become disengaged from your environment in stage two, where you will spend most of your total sleep time. Stages three and four contain the deepest, most restorative sleep and the dreamy state of REM, or rapid eye movement sleep.Adults could rock themselves to better sleep and memory, study says"During REM, the brain is highly reactive," Robbins said. "It almost looks like your brain is awake if we hook you up to two more electrodes and were able to modify your brain waves."REM can occur any time during the sleep cycle, but on average, it starts about 90 minutes after you've fallen asleep. REM is when your body and brain are busy storing memories, regulating mood and learning. It's also when you dream. Your arm and leg muscles are temporarily paralyzed during REM sleep, so you can't act out your dreams and injure yourself.Because a good night's sleep gives your sleep cycle time to repeat, you'll go through several REM cycles, which take up about 25% of your total sleeping time.Another important stage of sleep is deep sleep, when your brain waves slow into what is called delta waves or slow-wave sleep. It's the time when human growth hormone is released and memories are further processed."The deeper stages of sleep are really important for generation of neurons, repairing muscle and restoring the immune system," Robbins said. It's tough to wake a person from deep sleep. If you do wake, you can feel groggy and fatigued; mental performance can be affected for up to 30 minutes, studies show.4. Snoring, although annoying, is mostly harmlessIn your dreams, maybe. In fact, "loud, raucous snores interrupted by pauses in breathing" is a marker for sleep apnea, a dangerous sleep disorder that, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, increases risk for heart attacks, atrial fibrillation, asthma, high blood pressure, glaucoma, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and cognitive and behavior disorders.Using a CPAP machine can improve sex lives for some, study says"Sleep apnea is extremely exhausting," Robbins said. "These patients sleep and then they wake up over and over; then they are fighting sleep all day long because they're so exhausted. It's also very underdiagnosed. We believe it affects about 30% of the population, and around 10% are diagnosed."5. Drinking alcohol before bed helps you fall sleepDo you think a nightcap before bed will help you fall asleep and stay asleep? Dream on.No amount of alcohol is good for your overall health, global study saysAlcohol may help you fall asleep, but that's where the benefits end, Robbins said. Instead, it traps you in the lighter stages of sleep and "dramatically reduces the quality of your rest at night.""It continues to pull you out of rapid eye movement and the deeper stages of sleep, causing you to wake up not feeling restored," Robbins said.6. Not sleeping? Stay in bed with eyes closed and try and tryYou have to admit, it makes sense: How can you fall asleep if you're not in the bed trying? Yet sleep experts say that continuing to count sheep for more than 15 minutes isn't the smartest move."If we stay in bed, we'll start to associate the bed with insomnia," Robbins said. She equates it to "going to the gym and standing on a treadmill and not doing anything."In reality, Robbins said, it takes a healthy sleeper about 15 minutes to fall asleep. If you're tossing and turning much longer than that, you should get out of bed, change the environment and do something mindless: "Keep the lights low and fold socks," she suggested. Some people also believe that it's just as refreshing to your body to lie in bed with eyes closed but not sleeping. Nope. That's another pipe dream, experts say.7. It doesn't matter what time of day you sleepSleep experts say that's another myth that can negatively affect your health."We recommend that people have a regular sleep schedule because it controls what we call the biological clock, or circadian rhythm, of the body," Jean-Louis said. "That controls all the hormones of the body, body temperature, eating and digestion, and sleep-wake cycles."Weekend sleep-in might ruin your waistline and your health, study saysWhen your inner clock and the outside world are out of phase, you can feel disoriented, mentally foggy and sleepy at times when you need to be functioning at optimal levels. Just think of what happens when you travel across time zones or when daylight savings time kicks in.Studies of shift workers, who work unusual hours andlive out of sync with their normal biological rhythm, show that they are at increased risk for heart disease, ulcers, depression, obesity and certain cancers, as well as a higher rate of workplace accidents and injuries due to a slower reaction rate and poor decision-making.8. Watching TV in bed helps you relaxCome on, we all do it -- or we check our laptop or smartphone before we power down for the night. Unfortunately, that sets us up for a bad night."These devices emit bright blue light, and that blue light is what tells our brain to become alive and alert in the morning," Robbins explained. "We want to avoid blue light before bed, from sources like a television or your smartphone, and do things that relax you."Sacrificing sleep? Here's what it will do to your healthAccording to the National Sleep Foundation, blue light affects the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone, more than any other wavelength of light. Watching TV or using an electronic device within two hours of bedtime means it will take you longer to fall asleep, you'll have less dream state or REM sleep, and even if you do sleep eight or more hours, you'll wake feeling groggy. If you or your children can't make that two-hour cutoff because of homework or late-night work demands, experts suggest dimming the brightness of the screen or installing an app that can warm the screen to the sunset colors. Red and yellow have higher wavelengths and don't affect melatonin.9. Hitting snooze is great! No need to get up right away.Raise your hand if you hit the snooze button. Why not, right?"Resist the temptation to snooze, because unfortunately, your body will go back to sleep -- a very light, low-quality sleep," Robbins said.As you near the end of your sleep, your body is probably nearing the end of its last REM cycle. Hit that snooze button, and the brain falls right back into a new REM cycle. Now, when the alarm goes off a few minutes later, you'll be in the middle, not the end, of that cycle, and you'll wake up groggy and stay that way longer.Having trouble kicking the snooze button habit? Put the alarm on the other side of the room, so you have to get out of bed to turn it off.And no, you can't tell Google or Alexa to turn it off. That's cheating.10. Remembering your dreams is a sign of good sleep."That's a myth, because all of us do experience dreams four to five times a night," Jean-Louis said. "And we don't remember because we've not woken up and disrupted our sleep."What nightmares can tell us about our healthA study out of France showed that people who frequently remember their dreams have higher brain activity in the information-processing hub of the brains. They also woke twice as often during the night and were more sensitive to sounds when sleeping and awake."Now, I will tell you if you have a dream with a strong emotional context, it may come back to you at say, two o'clock in the afternoon, when you have some downtime to relax," Jean-Louis said. "Sometimes, something would trigger that. But if it is a weird little mundane dream, most of us who sleep well don't remember those."More mythsThe research team found more myths that we tend to accept as fact, Jean-Louis said, such as "more sleep is always better" (no, you really can sleep too much and harm your health), "taking a nap in the afternoon can fix insomnia" (actually, if you sleep long enough to enter a REM or deep sleep cycle, it can mess up your body clock even more), and "it's better to have a warm than cool bedroom" (no, you sleep better in cooler temps).Get CNN Health's weekly newsletterSign up here to get The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.Which means that we could all use a bit of education about good sleep hygiene, a set of habits to form that will set you up for a lifetime of healthy sleep. The National Sleep Foundation has tips, as does the CDC.After all, there's no amount of caffeine that can help you deal with the adverse implications of insufficient sleep, nor can you train yourself to adapt to sleep deprivation, Robbins said."Sleep is a highly active process," she said. "It's crucial, actually, in restoring the body and is in fact the most efficient, effective way to do so."Sweet dreams!(CNN)

10 Reasons To Have Regular LoveMaking Reasons To Have Regular LoveMaking: Did you know your body has more to gain when you have to sleep with your partner than when you refrain? Lovemaking isn’t meant for pleasure alone, but to keep your body and health in check. Just like hitting the gym or going for that morning run, lovemaking helps the body release serotonin, the feel-good hormone responsible for making your happy. The fun and best thing about lovemaking is that it is sweeter and more pleasurable than your 30-minute run on the treadmill. You can even spice it up a little with this jewelled item – take a look to find out more.Outlined below are some of the benefits, and reasons you need to have regular healthy lovemaking.1. Improved Heart HealthOn average, men burn around 4.2 calories per minute, with women burning 3.1 calories per minute during lovemaking. This puts lovemaking among other forms of physical exercises. This is due to the active muscles and increased pulse rate that triggers increased respiration to provide the much-needed energy fuel the activity.2. Reduced Stress LevelsLovemaking helps the brain wander off from anxieties and everyday worries. It also triggers the release of oxytocin and endorphins hormones responsible for the feeling of intimacy and relaxation. These hormones are known to suppress those that cause one to be stressed. In a study conducted on 46 women and men, the participants were put in stressful situations such as doing mental arithmetic aloud, and public speaking among other activities. One group was active while the other was not. The group with individuals that had stayed for longer without lovemaking recorded higher levels of stress than those who had either non-penetrative or penetrative lovemaking.3. Higher Immunity LevelsAccording to a study conducted in Pennsylvania, making love each week boosts the body’s ability to produce immunoglobin. This antibody is responsible for warding off disease and strengthening your immunity system. This, however, doesn’t mean having more lovemaking will prevent you from getting sick.4. Fight Headaches and MigrainesAlthough most people use headaches as an excuse for not engaging in lovemaking, the after effect of great lovemaking helps relieve the pressure thus knocking the headache off. Women who make love regularly have a 50% less chance of suffering headaches and migraines and will have the migraine gone soon after climaxing.5. It Promotes SleepIf you tend to toss and turn in bed, why not try making love. Lovemaking triggers the release of happy hormones and oxytocin. These hormones help the brain relax thus much easier to fall asleep. This could be the reason why men drift into sleep soon after having passionate lovemaking.6. Improved FertilityAccording to research, frequent ejaculation leads to healthy sperm production. Experts believe that DNA may be changed if sperm stays longer in the testes.7. A Sharper BrainAnother study at the University of Pavia – Italy found that making love regularly encourages new nerve growth. This is believed to improve the brain’s capacity and problem-solving abilities. The growth is usually recorded in the first stages of the relationship.8. Stronger Pelvic MusclesThis is for the ladies. Regular lovemaking facilitates stronger pelvic muscles. These muscles are primarily needed to help control the flow of urine, hence no more accidents or urine leak. This is particularly important when you get older.9. Improved WellbeingLovemaking has an almost similar effect as meditation, but multiple levels higher. Almost everyone climaxes feeling much happier and more relaxed. Regular lovemaking would, therefore, be good for your health and well-being, and especially with the fast-paced world and responsibilities.10. It Makes You HappyDuring the act, the body releases endorphins and other feel-happy hormones that improve our moods. It is for this reason most people come out feeling happier and less stressed. That said, having regular and passionate lovemaking will only make you emotionally healthy and more content.
Backed by Medical Studies By Jenny Hills, Nutritionist and Medical Writer Beauty Waking up in the morning with swollen puffy eyes and dark circles under them is not an ideal way to start your day. Puffy eyes (medical name periorbital edema) can send out a completely wrong message about your lifestyle and habits, and make you look like somebody who is not very healthy and balanced. There are many reasons for unsightly eye bags, ranging from allergies and lack of sleep to genetic factors that you can’t do so much about. Luckily, there are many simple and scientifically proven ways to treat puffy eyes and make you regain your healthy-looking and glowing appearance.Causes of Puffy EyesSome reasons behind baggy eyes are more obvious than others. It’s hardly surprising to have swollen and red eyes if you had a late night, little sleep or you are harboring a hangover.Allergies and chronic sinusitis can be another culprit behind puffy eyes (periorbital edema). And then there is also stress and different modern-day habits, such as staring at the computer screen for prolonged periods of time. Some factors you might not associate immediately with excessively swollen eyes. These include a bad diet dominated by salty foods and hormonal changes. Also, different irritants that you put on your body can play a role in developing eye bags, such as chemicals found in perfumes, cosmetics and detergents. And then there are some who are just prone to puffy eyes. Genetics can sometimes be blamed for having to put up with black circles day after day.Effective Natural Treatments For Puffy Eyes Backed by Scientific Studies CaffeineMost people wouldn’t think that the same ingredient that’s used to brew their morning cup of coffee could also help to get rid of dark circles and baggy puffiness from their eyes—but it can. The secret ingredient is caffeine.Caffeinated ingredients are generally consumed for their energy-boosting properties, but when you apply caffeine to your skin, something interesting happens: the caffeine acts as an anti-inflammatory treatment, and also has antioxidant properties.According to a scientific study, caffeine pad containing vitamin K in an Emu oil base was found to reduce wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes. The medical study concluded that “the anti-wrinkle pad is effective and safe to use for the management of under eye skin wrinkles, and the efficacy of this pad can be seen in three weeks.”Caffeine constricts the blood vessels just below the skin, thereby reducing the “puffiness” of bags under your eyes which can reduce swelling and even help to normalize skin tone. This means that topical application of caffeine can help rid your eyes of unwanted puffiness and dark circles—and you don’t even have to take up a coffee-drinking habit to get this benefit. How to Use Coffee Mixture for Eye BagsGround coffee beans, black peppercorns, a few drops of water and a dab of coconut oil are the key ingredients needed to use this method. The oil acts as a vehicle for the oils contained within the coffee and pepper, helping to spread the natural ingredients evenly across the under-eye area. Blend the following into the palm of your hand using your finger:1/2 teaspoon of ground coffee beans1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil1 pinch ground black pepperA few drops of waterApply this mixture in equal proportions to the area below each lower eyelid, taking care not to get any of the mixture into the eye itself (which would sting!).Leave this mask on for 5 to 10 minutes or until you begin to feel it drying.Dampen a soft cloth or cotton puff with water and gently wipe away the mask. Then go on about your day looking renewed and refreshed!Watch the video at the end of this article for a demonstration.Cucumber slicesCucumber slices are probably the most famous natural cure for puffy eyes and it has become a sort of a beauty ritual.A scientific study reported that cucumber contains flavonoids and tannins that can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness. Tannins are natural astringents that can help to reduce the appearance of puffy skin and diffuse excess fluid under the skin that is making your under-eye area appear swollen. How to use cucumbers to get rid of puffy eyesSlice the cucumber, put the slices in a plastic bag and freeze them. Lie down on a pillow and place the frozen cucumber slices over your eyes for about 10 minutes. Cucumbers contain antioxidants which ease the irritation, while the cooling effect helps reduce the swelling. You can read my article about 10 reasons to use cucumbers on your eyes to find out what research says about the many benefits of applying cucumbers on your eyes.Tea bagsAccording to medical studies, the caffeine in black and green tea can reduce puffiness and swelling around the eyes. One clinical study found that certain types of herbal teas can increase skin moisturization and smoothness and reduce roughness and wrinkles.Black and green tea contain flavonoidswhich are natural antioxidants. A medical study reported that green and black tea have anti inflammatory properties. How to use tea bags to reduce puffy eyesYou can use either green or black tea for this treatment. Green tea contains more antioxidants and will probably be more effective at reducing the irritation. It also has amazing health benefits. Some herbal teas can be used as well, such as chamomile tea which is known for its many health benefits.Other herbal teas that can be helpful for reducing puffy eyes are rooibos tea and eyberight.AdvertisementSteep the bags as you would for brewing a cup of tea, then press the excess liquid from the bags with your fingers.Refrigerate the bags until they are cool to the touch.Put the tea bags over your eyes while lying down. Leave them there for 10 to 15 minutes. You can repeat the process a few times a day. This can be done several times per week to keep under-eye circles and bags in check the natural way, without resorting to make-up to disguise the issue.Don’t throw the used tea bags as there are a lot of other things you can do with your used tea bags – read about the 14 great uses for used tea bags.Apply ice to reduce puffinessApplying ice under your eyes can reduce puffiness because ice causes the blood vessels to tighten and reduces the swelling.According to a scientific study, local ice compress can reduce swelling around the eyes. How to use ice compress to get rid of eye bagsWrap the ice cubes in a towel and press against your eyes for a few minutes. If you are in a hurry, a splash of cold water can have a similar effect. Rinse your face with cold water and enjoy the sensation of coldness as it wakes you up and tightens your eyes.Witch hazel may help to reduce puffy eyesWitch hazel is a natural skin tightening astringent and it is also a popular anti acnetreatment. One medical study found that a witch hazel extract reduced swelling. How to use witch hazel to get rid of eye bagsApply a few drops of witch hazel under your eyes with a brush or a soft cloth and let it dry. You don’t need to wash it.tAloe vera Aloe vera plant is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, which sooth and nourish the skin and also help to reduce wrinkles (read more about its benefits for great skin here). It is also one of the best natural treatments for dry skin around the eyes.Medical research has shown that aloe vera has an astringent effect that helps tighten pores. Aloe vera cream can also improve the elasticity of your skin which helps to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles. How to use aloe vera gel to improve puffy eyes and dark circlesIt is best if you get some fresh leaves, open them up and use the gel. Apply it gently under the eyes and make sure it doesn’t get into the eyes. The act of massaging by itself will reduce the swelling, as you improve blood circulation and help with the removal of fluids.Aloe vera is a common medicinal herb and is useful for other ailments, not just for the skin. If you want to learn more about aloe vera as well as other herbs, you can find more useful information in my e-book the Herbal Remedies Guide. This guide will teach you how to treat common ailments using herbs.Massage When puffiness is connected with the buildup of lymphatic fluid, an eye massage can do the trick.A medical study claims that “cleansing and massage of the eyelids, is well accepted in the management of many disorders of the eyelid.”Another scientific study claims that massage could be helpful in reducing swelling and puffiness. How to massage your eyes to reduce under eye puffinessGently massage the area around your eyes with your fingers. Use circular movements. Do this for a few minutes in the morning. Or, have a little respite during the day to help your eyes relax when you start feeling tired. Other Things You Should Consider to Prevent Puffy Eyes and Dark CirclesThere are other things that can help you keep your eyes fresh and healthy:Stay hydrated. If you don’t drink enough water throughout the day, the body will start storing it around your eyes as a reservoir for rainy days. When you don’t drink sufficient amounts of water, puffy eyes can be a direct result of this. Make sure you drink six to eight 8-ounces glasses each day (1.5 to 2 liters of water per day). In addition to puffy eyes, dehydration has 11 other downsides.Avoid excessive salt in your diet, as it can cause fluid retention. A medical study foundthat under eye bags or dark circles under the eyes can be caused by excessive salt consumption.Observe if your eyes become irritatedwhen you wear a certain hair spray or after putting on makeup. Avoid chemical irritantsand go for natural products that are less likely to cause adverse reactions.Take a break when you work and let your eyes rest.Use two pillows to prop your head a bit higher when you sleep. Elevation prevents the fluid from accumulating around your eyes.Don’t rub your eyes rigorously. You’ll just create a vicious cycle. verything you need to live wellNigeria is experiencing a heat wave at the moment. Nigeria has a dry and wet climate in alternating periods of the year which may be hot on some days – particularly in the dry season, the current spell of prolonged heat around the country is being described by many as the worst ever in recent history. It reached a peak of 42 degrees in some parts of the country- a level which may be detrimental to one’s health, causing dehydration and in severe cases, heat stroke – which is life-threatening. It may also worsen symptoms of current diseases.Meteorologists have suggested that the intense heatwave is expected to continue till the rains set in later this year. Therefore, it is imperative to adapt to the times and survive the heat wave. In this article, we will run through some health tips for surviving a heatwaveClose-up of a woman drinking water from a bottle | Jess KitchenThis is best achieved by drinking more water. You may elect to carry a container with you for immediate access when you are away from home or you may choose to purchase bottled water whenever necessary. Reduce your alcohol and caffeine intake because these drinks increase the process of dehydration. Drink water, even when you don’t feel thirsty.Eat small but frequent meals to stay energised throughout the dayEnsure that your meals contain the necessary nutrients for optimum health. Include water-rich fruits such as watermelons, pineapples, berries, cucumber and other similar fruits in your meals.Stay out of the sunAs much as possible, steer clear of the sun by staying indoors or in shaded areas. This is because, at high temperatures, dehydration sets in faster. Additionally, it increases the risks of developing skin cancer due to the effects of damaging ultraviolet rays from the sun. You can postpone outdoor activities at peak hours of sunlight, mostly in the afternoons between 12 and 3 pm.Stay in the coolest parts of the houseIf you have air conditioning, this is a great time to put it to use, especially at night. It is most effective when other sources of heat are eliminated, such as light bulbs. Ensure that your house or workplace is well ventilated and open the windows and shutters when it is safe to do so.If you work outdoors, take frequent breaks to stay out of the sun.this is important, especially during periods when you feel your temperature rise. You should also drink a lot of fluids.Use sunscreen to protect your skinLiving wall acts as sunscreen that helps lower ambient temperature in courtyard and reduce heat absorption by the walls. When you go out in the sun, it is important to apply sunscreen on your skin to shield your skin from the sun raysIt helps reduce the chances of developing pigmentation, wrinkles and skin cancer.Take frequent showers whenever necessaryWater has a cooling effect which is very useful during periods of extreme heat. You can take several showers, use a wet cloth to mop your body or splash water on your body when necessary. Avoid strenuous activity if you can. This is because the more active you are, the more heat generated by your body.Wear loose-fitting and light clothesLoose clothing allows airflow in between the fabric and your skin, improving aeration. This reduces the heat generated and the amount of sweat produced. You should avoid very dark colours because they tend to absorb the sun’s rays, causing you to feel even hotter. Contrastingly, lighter colours reflect sunlight and keep you at a decent temperature, especially if the fabric is made of cotton.Wear sunshades when you go out in the sunUnisex sunglasses photo PinterestYou should also wear a hat or a face-cap whenever you can.Pay attention to the elderly, the sick and to childrenThese are the categories of people who are most likely to get affected by excessive heat. Never leave them alone in enclosed places or parked vehicles. If you notice any changes in levels of consciousness, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, seizures, chest pain or severe muscle cramps, in yourself or in persons close to you, contact your doctor immediately. You should also follow weather reports and forecasts so as to plan your outdoor activities whenever necessary.

12 April 2019Trypanosomiasis, human African (sleeping sickness)Key factsSleeping sickness is endemic in 36 sub-Saharan Africa countries where there are tsetse flies that transmit the disease. The people most exposed to the tsetse fly and therefore the disease live in rural areas and depend on agriculture, fishing, animal husbandry or hunting.Human African trypanosomiasis takes 2 forms, depending on the parasite involved: Trypanosoma brucei gambiense accounts for more than 98% of reported cases.Sustained control efforts have reduced the number of new cases. In 2009 the number reported dropped below 10 000 for the first time in 50 years, and in 2017 there were 1446 cases recorded.Diagnosis and treatment of the disease is complex and requires specifically skilled staff.Human African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is a vector-borne parasitic disease. It is caused by infection with protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Trypanosoma. They are transmitted to humans by tsetse fly (Glossina genus) bites which have acquired their infection from human beings or from animals harbouring human pathogenic parasites.Tsetse flies are found just in sub-Saharan Africa though only certain species transmit the disease. For reasons that are so far unexplained, in many regions where tsetse flies are found, sleeping sickness is not. Rural populations living in regions where transmission occurs and which depend on agriculture, fishing, animal husbandry or hunting are the most exposed to the tsetse fly and therefore to the disease. The disease develops in areas ranging from a single village to an entire region. Within an infected area, the intensity of the disease can vary from one village to the next.Forms of human African trypanosomiasisHuman African trypanosomiasis takes 2 forms, depending on the parasite involved:Trypanosoma brucei gambiense is found in 24 countries in west and central Africa. This form currently accounts for 98% of reported cases of sleeping sickness and causes a chronic infection. A person can be infected for months or even years without major signs or symptoms of the disease. When more evident symptoms emerge, the patient is often already in an advanced disease stage where the central nervous system is affected.Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense is found in 13 countries in eastern and southern Africa. Nowadays, this form represents under 2% of reported cases and causes an acute infection. First signs and symptoms are observed a few months or weeks after infection. The disease develops rapidly and invades the central nervous system. Only Uganda presents both forms of the disease, but in separate zones.Another form of trypanosomiasis occurs mainly in Latin America. It is known as American trypanosomiasis or Chagas disease. The causal organism belongs to a different Trypanosoma subgenus and is transmitted by a different vector.Animal trypanosomiasisOther parasite species and sub-species of the Trypanosoma genus are pathogenic to animals and cause animal trypanosomiasis in wild and domestic animals. In cattle the disease is called Nagana. Trypanosomiasis in domestic animals, particularly in cattle, is a major obstacle to the economic development of affected rural areas.Animals can host the human pathogen parasites, especially T.b. rhodesiense, of which domestic and wild animals are an important reservoir. Animals can also be infected with T.b. gambiense and act as a reservoir to a lesser extent. However the precise epidemiological role of the animal reservoir in the gambiense form of the disease is not yet well known.Major human epidemicsThere have been several epidemics in Africa over the last century:one between 1896 and 1906, mostly in Uganda and the Congo Basin;one in 1920 in a number of African countries; andthe most recent epidemic started in 1970 and lasted until the late 1990s.The 1920 epidemic was controlled thanks to mobile teams which carried out the screening of millions of people at risk. By the mid-1960s, the disease was under control with less than 5000 cases reported in the whole continent. After this success, surveillance was relaxed, and the disease reappeared, reaching epidemic proportions in several regions by 1970. The efforts of WHO, national control programmes, bilateral cooperation and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) during the 1990s and early 21st century reversed the curve.Since the number of new human African trypanosomiasis cases reported between 2000 and 2012 dropped by 73%, the WHO neglected tropical diseases roadmap targeted its elimination as a public health problem by 2020.Disease burdenSleeping sickness threatens millions of people in 36 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Many of the affected populations live in remote rural areas with limited access to adequate health services, which complicates the surveillance and therefore the diagnosis and treatment of cases. In addition, displacement of populations, war and poverty are important factors that facilitate transmission. In 1998, almost 40 000 cases were reported, but estimates were that 300 000 cases were undiagnosed and therefore untreated.During the most recent epidemic the prevalence reached 50% in several villages in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan. Sleeping sickness was the first or second greatest cause of mortality in those communities, even ahead of HIV/AIDS.In 2009, after continued control efforts, the number of cases reported dropped below 10 000 (9878) for the first time in 50 years. This decline in number of cases has continued with 1446 new cases reported in 2017, the lowest level since the start of systematic global data-collection 80 years ago. The estimated number of actual cases is below 10 000 and the estimated population at risk is 65 million people.Current disease distributionThe disease incidence differs from one country to another as well as in different parts of a single country. In the last 10 years, over 70% of reported cases occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).The DRC is the only country that currently reports more than 1000 new cases annually and accounts for 77% of the cases reported in 2017.Guinea is the only country that declared between 100 and 200 new cases in 2015.Countries such as Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Malawi, Nigeria, South Sudan, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are reporting fewer than 100 new cases per year.Countries like Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Swaziland and Togo have not reported any new cases for over a decade. Transmission of the disease seems to have stopped in some of these countries but there are still some areas where it is difficult to assess the exact situation because the unstable social circumstances and/or difficult accessibility hinder surveillance and diagnostic activities.Infection and symptomsThe disease is mostly transmitted through the bite of an infected tsetse fly but there are other ways in which people are infected:Mother-to-child infection: the trypanosome can cross the placenta and infect the fetus.Mechanical transmission through other blood-sucking insects is possible, however, it is difficult to assess its epidemiological impact.Accidental infections have occurred in laboratories due to pricks with contaminated needles.Transmission of the parasite through sexual contact has been documented. In the first stage, the trypanosomes multiply in subcutaneous tissues, blood and lymph. This is also called haemo-lymphatic stage, which entails bouts of fever, headaches, joint pains and itchingIn the second stage the parasites cross the blood-brain barrier to infect the central nervous system. This is known as the neurological or meningo-encephalic stage. In general this is when more obvious signs and symptoms of the disease appear: changes of behaviour, confusion, sensory disturbances and poor coordination. Disturbance of the sleep cycle, which gives the disease its name, is an important feature. Without treatment, sleeping sickness is considered fatal although cases of healthy carriers have been reported.Disease management: diagnosisDisease management is made in 3 steps:Screening for potential infection. This involves using serological tests (only available for T.b.gambiense) and checking for clinical signs - especially swollen cervical lymph nodes.Diagnosing by establishing whether the parasite is present in body fluids.Staging to determine the state of disease progression. This entails examining the cerebrospinal fluid obtained by lumbar puncture.Diagnosis must be made as early as possible to avoid progressing to the neurological stage in order to elude complicated and risky treatment proceduresThe long, relatively asymptomatic first stage of T. b. gambiense sleeping sickness is one of the reasons why an exhaustive, active screening of the population at risk is recommended, in order to identify patients at an early stage and reduce transmission by removing their status of reservoir. Exhaustive screening requires a major investment in human and material resources. In Africa such resources are often scarce, particularly in remote areas where the disease is mostly found. As a result, some infected individuals may die before they can ever be diagnosed and treated.TreatmentThe type of treatment depends on the disease stage. The drugs used in the first stage are safer and easier to administer than those for second stage. Also, the earlier the disease is identified, the better the prospect of a cure. The assessment of treatment outcome requires follow up of the patient up to 24 months and entails laboratory exams of body fluids including cerebrospinal fluid obtained by lumbar puncture, as parasites may remain viable for long periods and reproduce the disease months after treatment.Treatment success in the second stage depends on drugs that cross the blood-brain barrier to reach the parasite. Such drugs are toxic and complicated to administer. In total five different drugs are used for the treatment of sleeping sickness. These drugs are donated to WHO by manufacturers and distributed free of charge to disease endemic countries.Drugs used in first stage treatment:Pentamidine: discovered in 1940, used for the treatment of the first stage of T.b. gambiense sleeping sickness. Despite non-negligible undesirable effects, it is in general well tolerated by patients.Suramin: discovered in 1920, used for the treatment of the first stage of T.b. rhodesiense. It provokes certain undesirable effects, including urinary tract and allergic reactions.Drugs used in second stage treatment:Melarsoprol: discovered in 1949, it is used for the treatment of both gambiense and rhodesiense infections. It is derived from arsenic and has many undesirable side effects, the most dramatic of which is reactive encephalopathy (encephalopathic syndrome) which can be fatal (3% to 10%). An increase in resistance to the drug has been observed in several foci, particularly in central Africa. It is currently recommended as first-line treatment for the rhodesienseform, and as second-line for the gambienseform.Eflornithine: this molecule, less toxic than melarsoprol, was registered in 1990. It is only effective against T.b. gambiense. The regimen is complex and difficult to apply.Nifurtimox: A combination treatment of nifurtimox and eflornithine was introduced in 2009. It simplifies the use of eflornithine by reducing the duration of treatment and the number of IV perfusions, but unfortunately it has not been studied for T.b. rhodesiense. Nifurtimox is registered for the treatment of American trypanosomiasis but not for human African trypanosomiasis. Nevertheless, after safety and efficacy data provided by clinical trials, its use in combination with eflornithine has been included in the "WHO List of Essential Medicines" and is currently recommended as first-line treatment for the gambienseform. Both drugs are provided free of charge by WHO to endemic countries with a kit containing all the material needed for its administration.A new comprehensive oral treatment for gambiense human African trypanosomiasis, fexinidazole received a positive scientific opinion from the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use in November 2018. This molecule can simplify and facilitate case management of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis.WHO is updating treatment guidelines that will define the role of fexinidazole in the current therapeutic arsenal. Fexinidazole is already registered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where most cases occur.Public private partnershipIn 2000 and 2001, WHO established public-private partnerships with Aventis Pharma (now Sanofi) and Bayer HealthCare which enabled the creation of a WHO-led control and surveillance programme, providing support to endemic countries in their control activities and the supply of medicines free of charge. The partnership was renewed in 2006, 2011 and 2016. The success in curbing the number of sleeping sickness cases has encouraged other private partners to sustain the WHO’s initiative towards eliminating the disease as a public health problem.WHO responseWHO provides support and technical assistance to national control programmes.WHO provides the anti-trypanosome medicines free of charge to endemic countries through public-private partnerships with Sanofi (pentamidine, melarsoprol and eflornithine) and with Bayer HealthCare (suramin and nifurtimox). The conditioning and shipment of medicines is done in collaboration with MSF-Logistics.In 2009, WHO set up a biological specimens bank that is available to researchers to facilitate the development of new and affordable diagnostic tools. The bank contains samples of blood, serum, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva and urine from patients infected with both forms of the disease as well as samples from uninfected people from areas where the disease is endemic. In 2014 a coordination network for human African trypanosomiasis was established under WHO leadership to ensure strengthened and sustained efforts to eliminate the disease. The stakeholders include national sleeping sickness control programmes, groups developing new tools to fight the disease, international and non-governmental organizations, and donors. The objectives of the WHO programme are to:strengthen and coordinate control measures and ensure field activities are sustained;strengthen surveillance systems;ensure accessibility to the diagnosis and the best treatment available;support the monitoring of treatment and drug resistance;develop an information database for epidemiological analysis, including the atlas of the human African trypanosomiasis, completed in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO);ensure skilled staff by offering training activities;support operational research to improve diagnostic and treatment tools;promote collaboration with the FAO in charge of animal trypanosomiasis and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) dealing with vector control through male flies made sterile by radiation. The 3 UN agencies along with the African Union have promoted the Programme Against African Trypanosomiasis (PAAT);synergize vector and disease control activities in collaboration with the Pan African Tsetste and Trypanosomosis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC) of the African Union.
8 Things You Should Stop Doing When You Wake Up in the Morning As if getting out of bed in the morning wasn’t hard enough, we always seem to be bombarded with all sorts of distractions whenever we first wake up. And while some of our morning routines are filled with healthy rituals to help jumpstart our days (10-minute meditation, anyone?), many of us also practice AM habits that aren’t so beneficial. From hitting the snooze button to scrolling through your Instagram feed, here are eight things you should avoid doing after you wake up in the morning.1. Checking social mediaAlong with being bad for your mental health, mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds right after you wake up is a surefire way to lose track of time (and your focus) in the morning.2. Forgetting about breakfastWhether you prefer egg whites, cereal, or skipping it all together, your morning meal plan should be whatever you (and your health provider) can feel good about. But you should be intentional about it. Adhering to a strategic breakfast plan in the morning will help you better anticipate your schedule for the rest of the day and ensure you don’t get derailed on your way to work.3. Anything you could have done the night beforeWhether it’s picking out an outfit or packing a lunch, anything you can handle ahead of time will help your mornings go more smoothly. Set yourself up for success by planning your day the night before and free up some extra time in the morning4. Hitting snoozeWe already knew that hitting the snooze button on your alarm will leave you feeling groggy the rest of the day, but it turns out that fragmented sleep is bad for your health too. So instead of slapping the snooze button to score a few measly extra minutes of sleep in the morning, try going to bed a half hour earlier every night.5. Waking up at inconsistent timesNot only does creating—and sticking to—a set sleep schedule help ensure you get a solid seven to nine hours of sleep every night, it makes waking up in the morning (sans the snooze button) a whole lot easier.6. Checking your emailGetting out of bed can be tough as is, so why put yourself through the added stress of checking your emails before you even get to work? Experts say that by checking your emails first thing in the AM, you might be setting a stressful tone for the rest of the day, so try your best to avoid checking your email before you actually step foot in the office (or at least until you get to the train7. Drinking coffee right awayLike it or not, research shows that drinking a cup of joe first thing in the morning might be doing you any favors. Along with increasing your tolerance to caffeine, research shows that consuming coffee before 10 a.m. can mess with your cortisol levels—leaving you feeling groggier and more stressed than you would have felt if you’d waited.8. Making your bed immediatelyUntidy people rejoice: Making your bed, at least right after you wake up, might not be the best course of action. Per BBC News, a group of scientists discovered that leaving your bed unmade to air for a while will help kill off dust mites that thrive in moist environments.
WHOThe World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday that it feared outbreaks of infectious diseases due to dirty water and people fleeing fighting nearing Tripoli, where it has about two weeks of emergency supplies for hospitals and health facilities. After a week of fighting, 75 people have been killed and 323 wounded, including seven civilians killed and 10 wounded, Dr Syed Hussain, WHO representative in Libya told a Geneva news conference from Tripoli. He said the WHO has delivered trauma kits and medicines to hospitals.“These supplies will last for two weeks, the acute phase,” he said.So far 6,000 have fled the fighting but WHO has contingency plans in case “thousands if not hundreds of thousands” are displaced in the acute phase of fighting.Thousands of refugees held in detention centres in Libya, since fighting erupted between rival groups.Sam Turner, Doctors Without Borders’ (MSF) head of mission for Libya and search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean said: ”there is a serious risk to thousands of refugees and migrants trapped in detention, with at least one detention centre located in the direct vicinity of the fighting. The United Nations’ refugee agency said on Thursday that it had evacuated 152 women and children from one centre near the fighting in the south of the city, and that more could follow.

However, many of the nutrients are contained beneath the skin.Follow the steps below to cook ginger water:The open part of the ginger root must be wash before boiling it.A zester should be used to grate 1/2 teaspoon of the ginger plants.4 cups of water should be boiled on the stove or gas cooker. The washed ginger should be added once the water is boiling. The ginger water should be removed from the heat and let the ginger steep in the water for about 10 minutes.Filter the ginger pieces from the water and disposed of the ginger. The ginger water can be drunk either hot or cold. The ginger water is delicious with a teaspoon or less of added honey or lemon juice, but don’t abuse it with added sweeteners. It is advisable, if you want to drink the ginger water every day, you can make enough of it and keep it handy in the refrigerator.DosageMedical recommendation is by consuming a maximum of 3–4 grams of ginger extract per day. Pregnant women are advised not to consume more than 1 gram of ginger extract per day.Below are equivalents to 1 gram of ginger:1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger.1 teaspoon grated raw ginger.4 cups water steeped with 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger.Less raw ginger is required when making tea because certain nutrients in ginger concentrate when heated.Note: The required procedure to make ginger water is equal to the process of making ginger tea. Also, it is not recommended for children under the age of 2. How To Eat Ginger?Ginger: Photo source: GoogleThere are different ways to eat ginger. Chewing it raw or eating it fresh are some of the ways.Raw Root: Slice a thin piece of raw ginger off, peel the ginger root and chew it the way you would chew a piece of chewing gum. Once the flavour is gone, you can replace it with a new piece of ginger.

Preliminary research reveals that a technique called Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training can boost cognitive and physical performance, as well as cardiovascular health.New research adds another tool in the toolbox for preventing high blood pressure. Most of us know that exercising and eating right are good for us.However, putting in the effort to do so can often require more willpower than we have. What if there was a way to reap all the benefits of a workout without having to lift a finger?New research introduces a 5-minute technique that might improve blood pressure, lower heart attack risk, boost cognitive ability, and enhance sports performance — all while barely having to move. The technique is called Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST), and researchers led by Daniel Craighead — a postdoctoral researcher in the University of Colorado Boulder's Department of Integrative Physiology — have tested the technique in a clinical trial."IMST is basically strength-training for the muscles you breathe in with," explains Craighead. The researcher and his colleagues presented the preliminary results of their research at the annual Experimental Biology conference, which this year takes place in Orlando, FL.Why study the benefits of IMST?IMST involves inhaling through a resistive hand-held device called an inspiratory muscle trainer. Its creators initially developed it for people with respiratory problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis, or cystic fibrosis, or to wean people off ventilators.Craighead and team explain that in 2016, a 6-week trial on the effects of IMST on obstructive sleep apnea — during which participants performed 30 inhalations per day — revealed that using the device also lowered systolic blood pressure by 12 millimeters of mercury.Frequent urination at night may be a sign of hypertensionNew research finds that nocturia, or the need to urinate frequently at night, may signal high blood pressure.READ NOWExercising for the same amount of time usually only lowers blood pressure by half that amount, and the benefits seem to exceed those normally achieved with hypertension medication. This trial piqued the researchers' interest, so they set out to study the possible benefits of IMST for the vascular, cognitive, and physical health of 50 middle-aged adults."Our goal is to develop time-efficient, evidence-based interventions that [...] busy midlife adults will actually perform," explains senior investigator Prof. Doug Seals, the director of the University of Colorado Boulder's Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory.Lowers blood pressure and boosts cognitionThe researchers compared participants who tried IMST with people who used a sham device that provided no resistance on inhalation. They found that the blood pressure was significantly lower among IMST participants and that the function of their large arteries had improved considerably.IMST participants also performed better on cognitive tests and treadmill tests. In the treadmill tests, they were able to run for longer and keep their heart rate and oxygen consumption low."[IMST is] something you can do quickly in your home or office, without having to change your clothes, and so far it looks like it is very beneficial to lower blood pressure and possibly boost cognitive and physical performance."Daniel Craighead"High blood pressure," claims Craighead, "is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in America. Having another option in the toolbox to help prevent it would be a real victory."However, the study authors caution that their results are preliminary, and that people interested in the technique should consult their physician first.

Bad breath: What causes it and what to do about it Almost everyone experiences bad breath once in a while. But for some people, bad breath is a daily problem, and they struggle to find a solution. Approximately 30% of the population complains of some sort of bad breath. Halitosis (Latin for “bad breath”) often occurs after a garlicky meal or in the morning after waking. Other causes of temporary halitosis include some beverages (including alcoholic drinks or coffee) and tobacco smoking. Some people may not be aware of their own halitosis and learn about it from a relative, friend, or coworker, causing some degree of discomfort and distress. In severe cases, bad breath may negatively impact personal relationships and a person’s quality of life. What causes bad breath? And what can you do about it?Bad breath can originate both inside and outside of the mouth. Bad breath is typically caused by bacteria present on the teeth and debris on the tongue. So it’s no surprise that most cases of halitosis are associated with poor oral hygiene, gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, and dry mouth, a condition in which the salivary glands cannot make enough saliva to keep your mouth moist. A visit with a dentist may help rule out periodontal disease and identify any mouth problem that could be contributing to bad breath.Tonsillitis, respiratory infections such as sinusitis or bronchitis, and some gastrointestinal diseases may be responsible for a small number of cases of bad breath. Advanced liver or kidney disease and uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to unpleasant breath. In these cases, a person is likely to experience significant symptoms beyond bad breath, and should seek medical attention.Sometimes people think they have bad breath, even when their breath is objectively fine. This is called “pseudo-halitosis.” Halitophobia, or fear of bad breath, is real and may persist despite reassurance from a doctor. People with pseudo-halitosis respond well to reassurance, and may benefit from speaking with a therapist or psychiatrist who has expertise in the field.A person complaining of bad breath can be initially evaluated by a primary care physician (PCP). The doctor will begin with a thorough medical and dental history and an oral exam. Tests may be done to confirm the presence of halitosis by measuring the strength of bad breath on a predefined scale, and by using instruments to detect specific compounds related to halitosis. The intensity of malodor is usually assessed by the doctor smelling the air that the person breathes out through the nose or mouth, or from judging the odor of a tongue scraping, a length of dental floss, or a dental appliance such as a night guard.Your PCP may refer you to a dentist if there is evidence of dental or gum problems, which is the cause in the majority of people with bad breath. Visits with other medical specialists are warranted when an underlying medical problem requires attention.Tips to improve bad breathHere are some helpful tips to improve bad breath:Brush your teeth at least twice a day, after meals, with a fluoridated toothpaste.Avoid tobacco smoking and chewing tobacco-based products.Rinse and gargle with an alcohol-free mouthwash before bed.If you have dry mouth, make sure to drink enough fluids throughout the day and use over-the-counter moisturizing agents, such as a dry mouth spray, rinses, or dry mouth moisturizing gel. If you don’t see any improvement, you may want to schedule a visit with an oral medicine specialist. Oral medicine doctors provide comprehensive care for mucosal diseases, salivary gland disorders, orofacial pain conditions, and oral complications of cancer therapies, among other things.Visit your dentist regularly. Remember, oral causes are responsible for most cases of bad breathSource:Dentist
Scientists Explain Things That Cause Swollen Legs (And How to Fix It) Swollen legs – otherwise known as edema or water retention – can be a cause for concern for many people. If you’re not sure what’s causing it, you have every reason to be concerned about what the underlying cause may be. The good news is that modern research has shown us exactly what causes this to happen. Armed with this information, you can ease the problem. Here is how science explains what causes swollen legs, and how to get rid of it!“If people see any redness, blistering or swelling in the legs, especially if it is getting worse, they definitely need to see their doctor.” – Dr. Leslie GilbertHere Are 6 Underlying Causes of Swollen Legs and How to Fix Them1. Lack of activityMost swelling issues are caused by minor circulation problems that occur when you don’t move around enough, causing the lower extremities to retain water and experience fluid buildup. If you spend most of your day sitting in a chair in an office or tend to use most of your free time to sit in front of a TV, then your swelling legs could be your body’s way of saying, “We need to get moving!”What’s the best way to fight this problem? It’s pretty simple – just get some more exercise! You don’t have to go all out at the gym or join a yoga or CrossFit class, though, unless you want to. Just set aside at least 30 minutes every day to do some light walking. You’d be surprised the wonders that just a little bit of physical activity can do for the body! Really exhausted and can’t stomach the idea of exercise right now? Try elevating your feet and legs above your heart level while you lie down to reduce swelling.2. Blood clotsBlood clots in the legs are less serious than they sound in most cases – though they can be dangerous if left untreated – and are medically referred to as venous insufficiency. The chances of developing blood clots increase with age and often occur in women who have been pregnant. What happens is that the vein walls inside the legs begin to lose their strength, causing one-way valves leading to the heart to face damage. This causes the veins in the legs to fill with blood, even more so if you’ve been standing for a long time.Regularly keeping the legs elevated while you sit, lie down, and sleep can bring down swelling caused by this problem, and it can stop the situation from becoming exacerbated. You can also purchase support stockings, but make sure they aren’t tight enough to cause marks. If you really need them, you can also opt for prescription compression stockings; speak to a doctor or physician for options.3. A bad dietMalnutrition is one of the leading causes of seemingly random leg swelling, causing unwanted fluid retention in the extremities in severe cases. This can also happen if you are consuming too much salt with your food, especially since too much sodium causes the body to retain water. The best way to solve edema caused by an unhealthy diet is to start eating a healthier one! If you think your diet is fine and aren’t sure what is causing the issue, try keeping a food diary. Also note the occurrence of your swelling so you can compare it to what you’re eating. You might find a surprising link between your swollen legs and a particular meal!4. PMS or pregnancyMany people who have periods may experience swelling and bloating around the week before their period, which is known as the PMS (or premenstrual syndrome) phase of the cycle. It’s not uncommon at all for those who are experiencing PMS to have swollen legs. This problem also occurs in those who are pregnant. Of course, PMS and pregnancy are two very different things, but we’re lumping them together here because they have a similar remedy!A little-known positive remedy is the consumption of warm parsley tea. To make this refreshing beverage, chop the leaves and roots of parsley finely, then place about ¼ cup of these chopped components into an infusion basket. Submerge this inside a teapot with boiled water or pour hot, boiled water over the parsley. Allow to infuse for between five and seven minutes, then take out the infusion basket and strain the drink. You can add lemon, ginger, or even honey to taste.5. Kidney or liver issuesPitting edema is a kind of water retention that affects not just the legs, but the face and hands as well. This sort of edema is a result of either liver or kidney troubles. Symptoms are often worst when you wake up first thing in the morning. This is quite a serious and potentially dangerous issue. It can cause protein from the blood to leak into the urine and reduce the overall protein in your body, which then causes fluid buildup. If you suspect that your edema and swollen legs are caused by kidney or liver issues, you’ll want to see a doctor as soon as possible. This can cause further complications in the future if not properly looked at.6. Heart issuesIf you have been facing heart troubles or have experienced similar concerns, this can be the cause behind your swelling legs. This is because the heart might lack the strength necessary to pump the blood needed around your entire system, and your legs – being extremities – will suffer the most from this. The condition is called generalized edema and means your legs are experiencing water retention. If you are experiencing shortness of breath when you’re lying down flat or after even minimal exercise, your heart may be suffering. In this case, once again, your best option will be to head to the doctor’s and have some tests done. Your doctor can suggest plenty of very effective and simple treatments to help.Final thoughtsSwollen legs can seem scary, but not all cases of them represent a serious medical concern. In fact, most of the causes behind swollen legs can be easily treated on your own at home. That said, swollen legs can cause pain and discomfort that disrupts focus, positive thinking, and can even lead to other minor medical problems. Try to follow the advice above, and you should be able to get rid of your swelling issues quickly. Dailyadvent.com
APRIL 10, 20198:43 PMAccra (Ghana) – Google, through the Artificial Intelligence (AI)Centre is set to develop solutions for pancreatic cancer. Google Mr Moustpha Cisse, Head of Google AI Accra, made this known on Wednesday while unveiling its new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre in Accra Ghana. Cisse said Google has started carrying out research to develop solutions that would address the problems peculiar to Africa, one of which was the development of solutions for pancreatic cancer in Africans. AI is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and translation between languages. According to Cisse, operations at the AI Centre is based on Google’s AI principles which ensures that things done will benefit people, will not violate their rights and done in a responsible way. “At Google AI, we are conducting research that advances the state-of-the-art in the field, applying AI to products and developing tools to ensure that everyone can access AI. “AI is no longer science fiction, but now a practical software engineering tool that is proving crucial to advancing science and tackling some of the biggest global challenges, as well as helping millions of people in their daily living. “In practice, AI is all about recognising patterns, making sense of messiness, picking signals out of the noise. “It can help people focus on what is relevant and open up new ways to solve problems in almost every imaginable field. “AI helps pathologists to spot cancer cells on sides; advising farmers on how to address problems with their crops and allowing manufacturers to better predict equipment breakdown. “It helps in making predictions in less than one second for farmers and their yields,” he said. Cisse said ultimately, AI biggest impact would come when everyone could access it, adding that Google was committed to publishing their research, participating in academic conferences and sharing tools and datasets. He added that AI was for everyone, listing some of the things it could be used for to include creating a more efficient diary farms, predicting cargo space on flights, and routing customers’ helpline calls. Others are spotting anomalies on a food production line, solving the youth unemployment challenges, better flight route predictions, among others. Cisse said alongside the tremendous opportunities that AI offers, there were new challenges, including how society think about fairness, building inclusive experiences, and equipping workforce for jobs of the future. He said that AI’s influence on the world would be determined by the choices people make in embracing it, the guidance, boundaries set for its application by government and international bodies. The software engineers and research scientists were present at the unveiling of the centre, including Andrea Frome, Yann Dauphin, Nyalleng Moorosi, Jorg Doku, Sarah Hooker, Mohammad Nassar, among others.(NAN)
Medical Parasitologist, Prof. Wellington Oyibo, has advised people to stop treating malaria and other ailments without carrying out the right examination. The medical consultant from the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba, gave the warning on Wednesday inLagos.Advertise With UsOyibo said that malaria has become antibiotic resistance because people take medicine without seeing good result.According to him, different organisms, whether as bacteria or parasite, can trigger drug resistance when one indulges in self-medication.“So for a condition to be properly managed there is need to do the right testing. If you treat what you don’t have, you cannot get the result of what you are testing, so in that paradigm, there should be the right and appropriate testing as well as access to testing,” Oyibo told NAN.“There is a test we call MPS, which is Microscopy, Culture and Sensitivity. After carrying out the right culture, sensitivity testing for bacteria, there is an exposure to a range of antibiotics that will now be recommended to see those that are susceptible.“It is on this basis that you can then say you want to change your antibiotics and use a couple of antibiotics. When you take the wrong antibiotics not appropriate, it will trigger the bacteria that are exposed to antibiotics to a different form.“As they have been exposed to those drugs, the bacteria or parasite can be destroyed. With that, you begin to form a huge population of organisms that are now resistance to some of those antibiotics.“When these organisms that are resistance in person A, now gets to person B, C and D, that medicine that even worked primarily will not work again.“The parasitologist also urged people not to take medicines and stop midway just when they felt they had comfort already.
Do Not Take These Foods If You Have Ulcer! Some people with ulcersalsohave acid reflux disease. Certain foods, in certain people, can affect the lower part of the esophagus, called the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), allowing acid and stomach contents to back up into the esophagus. This can cause injury to the esophagus, as well as heartburn, indigestion and other discomfort. To reduce acid reflux pain, you may want to limit:⦁ coffee, and other caffeinated beverages⦁ carbonated beverages⦁ chocolate⦁ chilies and hot peppers⦁ high-salt diet⦁ deep-fried foods⦁ acidic foods like citrus and tomatoesOvereating and eating within two to three hours of going to bed may also worsen the symptoms of acid reflux. But not every food acts the same is every person, so keeping track of which foods seem to make acid reflux symptoms worse can be helpful.AlcoholHaving more than one drink a day for women and more than two for men is considered excessive drinking. If a couple of drinks after work is how you unwind, you might want to consider a healthier alternative. Regular alcohol use cause significant stomach inflammation. Also, alcohol is another substance that can relax the lower part of the esophagus, increasing your risk for acid reflux. Are you in need of the final solution to your ulcer problem? You’ll be glad you did…Source: NaijaParrot(http://naijaparrot.com)

Chili pepper compound may slow down lung cancerPublished: TodayWritten by: Ana SandoiuSHARE THIS ARTICLE:A new study finds that capsaicin, the pungent compound in chili peppers, can successfully stop lung cancer metastasis.According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is "by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women" in the United States. The Society also estimate that 228,150 people will develop lung cancer and 142,670 people will die from the condition in 2019.Most deaths occur as a result of the cancer metastasizing, or spreading, to distant parts of the body.New research suggests that there may be a nutritional compound that can hinder this process of metastasis. Capsaicin, which is the chemical compound that gives chili peppers their pungent flavor, stopped lung cancer metastasis in rodents and cultured human cell lines.Piyali Dasgupta, Ph.D., from the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in Huntington, WV, is the senior investigator of the new study. Jamie Friedman, a doctoral researcher in Dasgupta's lab, is the first author of the paper.Friedman and colleagues presented their findings at the American Society for Investigative Pathology annual meeting in Orlando, FL.How capsaicin works against cancerThe researchers tested capsaicin in three cultured lines of human non-small cell lung cancer cells and found that capsaicin stopped the first stage of metastasis, which is called "invasion."Friedman and colleagues also fed mice with lung cancer a diet enhanced with capsaicin and found that these rodents had a much smaller number of metastatic cancer cells in their lungs compared with mice that did not receive the treatments.Further cell experiments found that capsaicin stopped metastasis in lung cancer by blocking the activation of the Src protein — a protein that is key in regulating the proliferation, survival, and motility of the cells. Friedman and colleagues conclude:"Our results show that capsaicin directly interacts with Src and inhibits Src activation to suppress the metastasis of [lung cancer]. The results of our studies may foster the development of novel anti-metastatic therapies for human [lung cancer]."However, the researchers also note that they need to develop capsaicin analogs that would bypass its side effects. "We hope that one day capsaicin can be used in combination with other chemotherapeutics to treat a variety of lung cancers," says Friedman. "However, using capsaicin clinically will require overcoming its unpleasant side effects, which include gastrointestinal irritation, stomach cramps, and a burning sensation.""Lung cancer and other cancers commonly metastasize to secondary locations like the brain, liver, or bone, making them difficult to treat," adds Friedman. "Our study suggests that the natural compound capsaicin from chili peppers could represent a novel therapy to combat metastasis in lung cancer patients."Jamie FriedmanThis is not the first study to hail the potential health benefits of capsaicin. Previous research found that the compound can inhibit the development of triple-negative breast cancer cells and other studies suggested that it may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Finally, previous research has also suggested that the compound can extend our lifespan.
*Liver, colon tumour cells thwarted by compounds derived from hopsFindings from a new study show that the compound responsible for chili (hot) peppers heat could help slow the spread of lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. Most cancer-related deaths occur when cancer spreads to distant sites, a process called metastasis.Lung cancer and other cancers commonly metastasize to secondary locations like the brain, liver or bone, making them difficult to treat, said Jamie Friedman, a doctoral candidate who performed the research in the laboratory of Piyali Dasgupta, PhD, at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Our study suggests that the natural compound capsaicin from chili peppers could represent a novel therapy to combat metastasis in lung cancer patients.Friedman presented the research at the American Society for Investigative Pathology annual meeting during the 2019 Experimental Biology meeting held April 7-9 in Orlando, Florida, United States. In experiments involving three lines of cultured human non-small cell lung cancer cells, the researchers observed that capsaicin inhibited invasion, the first step of the metastatic process. They also found that mice with metastatic cancer that consumed capsaicin showed smaller areas of metastatic cancer cells in the lung compared to mice not receiving the treatment.Additional experiments revealed that capsaicin suppresses lung cancer metastasis by inhibiting activation of the protein Src. This protein plays a role in the signaling that controls cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, motility and adhesion. We hope that one day capsaicin can be used in combination with other chemotherapeutics to treat a variety of lung cancers, said Friedman. However, using capsaicin clinically will require overcoming its unpleasant side effects, which include gastrointestinal irritation, stomach cramps and a burning sensation. The researchers are working to identify capsaicin analogs that will be non-pungent while retaining the anti-tumor activity of capsaicin. They are also trying to identify natural non-pungent capsaicin-like compounds with anti-cancer activity.Jamie Friedman presented this research on Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m. during the Experimental Biology Welcome Reception in Valencia Ballroom ABCD, Orange County Convention Center and on Tuesday, April 9 at 8:30 p.m. in Room W108 B (poster 368.1) (abstract). Also, the plant that adds flavour, colour and bitterness to beer also produces a primary compound that thwarts cancer cells, and two important derivatives of the compound do as well, new research at Oregon State University, United States, shows.Unlike the primary compound, xanthohumol, known as XN, the derivatives dont metabolize into phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant-based chemicals similar to female sex hormones that help some types of tumors grow and can cause other health problems as well. The research showed, for the first time, that the derivatives have cancer-fighting effectiveness similar to that of XN in liver and colon carcinomas. That means the two non-estrogenic derivatives are attractive alternatives for testing, along with XN, in future preclinical studies..The study was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Xanthohumol is produced by humulus lupulus, the common hop plant. More than 20 years ago, researchers discovered that XN inhibits cell growth in a variety of cancer cell lines. But a potential problem with XN is that enzymes in the liver and the gut microbiota metabolize it into 8- prenylnaringenin, or 8-PN, the most potent phytoestrogen known, said the studys corresponding author, Adrian Gombart, professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the College of Science at Oregon State University and principal investigator at OSUs Linus Pauling Institute. The derivatives that dont metabolize into 8-PN are DXN, short for dihydroxanthohumol, and TXN, which refers to tetrahydroxanthohumol. Earlier, Gombarts Linus Pauling Institute colleague and co-author Fred Stevens led a study into DXN and TXNs effects on metabolic syndrome. In that previous research we showed that the two derivatives reduced weight gain and improved biomarkers of metabolic syndrome, Gombart said. XN had been shown to inhibit proliferation of a variety of cancer cell lines, and in this study, we demonstrated XNs ability to halt cell growth and kill two liver cancer cell lines and two colon cancer cell lines. We tested liver and colon cancer cell lines because oral consumption of XN and its derivatives can lead to high concentrations in the gut and liver.Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related death in the United States, and liver cancer ranks fifth. The incidence of liver cancer, though, has tripled in the last four decades. For both of those cancers, discovering new compounds for prevention and treatment is imperative, Gombart said. In all the cell lines tested, DXN and TXN inhibited cell growth and caused cell death, as did XN. And for most cell types, DXN and TXN were slightly more potent.Experimental Biology is an annual meeting that attracts more than 14,000 scientists and exhibitors from five host societies and more than two dozen guest societies. With a mission to share the newest scientific concepts and research findings shaping clinical advances, the meeting offers an unparalleled opportunity for exchange among scientists from across the U.S. and the world who represent dozens of scientific areas, from laboratory to translational to clinical research.ASIP is a society of biomedical scientists who investigate mechanisms of disease. On an early spring day in 2018, the faint smell of formaldehyde floating in the air, 26-year-old medical student Warren Nielsen and four of his classmates prepped a cadaver in the chilly dissection lab at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.Similar groups of five gathered around bodies on the other 15 tables in the anatomy class, all eager to explore the mysteries of the human body they had seen only in textbooks. The cadaver assigned to Nielsen's team was a 99-year-old woman who had died of natural causes. Her name was Rose Marie Bentley, but the students didn't know that then. To honor and respect the privacy of those who offer their bodies to science, no further details are given medical students about the person who had once inhabited the body lying on the silvery slab before them.Rose Marie Bentley, not long before she died and donated her body to science. But as the students and their professors were soon to find out, Bentley was special, so special she deserved her own unique spot in medical literature and history books. The reason? A condition called situs inversus with levocardia, in which most vital organs are reversed -- almost like a mirror inside the body. That, along with a host of other weird but wonderful abnormalities, made Bentley a sort of medical unicorn."I think the odds of finding another person like her may be as remote as one in 50 million," said assistant professor Cameron Walker, who teaches the Foundations of Clinical Anatomy class at Oregon Health and Science University. "I don't think any of us will ever forget it, honestly."'This is totally backwards'On this March day, the assignment was to open the body's chest cavity to examine the heart. It wasn't long before Nielsen's group began to question their fledgling medical knowledge."Her heart was missing a large vein that's normally on the right side," Nielsen said.Bewildered, he and his team called the professors over and asked: "Where's the inferior vena cava? Are we missing it? Are we crazy?""And they kind of rolled their eyes," Nielsen said, "Like, 'how can these students miss this big vessel?' And they come over and that's when the hubbub starts. They're like 'Oh, my God, this is totally backwards!' "A typical body has a large vein called the vena cava that follows the right side of the vertebral column, curving under the liver and emptying deoxygenated blood into the heart.Bentley's vein was on the left, and instead of terminating directly into the heart, which is typical, "her vein continued through her diaphragm, along the thoracic vertebrae, up and around and over the aortic arch and then emptied into the right side of her heart," Walker said."Normally speaking, none of us have a vessel that does that directly," he added. That wasn't the only irregularity Walker and his students found in Bentley's body.Numerous veins that typically drain the liver and other parts of the chest cavity were either missing or sprouting from an unusual spot. Her right lung had only two lobes, instead of the standard three, while the right atrium of her heart was twice normal size."And instead of having a stomach on the left, which is normal, her stomach was on the right," Walker said. "Her liver, which normally occurs predominantly on the right, was predominantly on the left. Her spleen was on the right side instead of its normal occurrence on the left. And then the rest of her digestive tract, the ascending colon, was inverted as well."The mutations in situs inversus with levocardia occur early, Walker explained, possibly between 30 and 45 days into the pregnancy. No one knows why.The condition occurs in only 1 out of 22,000 babies and is invariably associated with severe congenital heart disease. Because of the heart defects, only 5% to 13% live past the age of 5; case reports mention one 13-year-old boy and a 73-year-old who at the time was the second-longest survivor. But Bentley was an anomaly, one of the few born with the condition that didn't have heart defects, Walker said."That is almost certainly the factor that contributed most to her long life," he said. And that, along with all her other exceedingly rare anatomical abnormalities, is what makes Bentley 1 in 50 million, Walker estimated.'Mom would have been so tickled'Rose Marie Phelps was born in 1918 in Waldport, a small town on the Oregon coast. The youngest child of four, "she was babied," said daughter Patti Helmig, who at 78 is the oldest of her five children. "She would admit she was spoiled."A hairdresser by trade, Bentley was always fascinated by science, Helmig remembered, and she believes her mother would have made a fine nurse if she had been given the opportunity to train."She volunteered during World War II for one of the nurse's aid corps," Helmig said. "And she was thrilled when someone reached out to her about doing a study on smallpox survivors, which she had as a child."Rose Marie Bentley with a big catch.Despite chronic heartburn (which would have been explained by her unusual gastric anatomy), Bentley never showed any negative effects from her flip-flopped innards, said 76-year-old Ginger Robbins, the third of Bentley's children."We had no reason to believe there was anything like that wrong," Robbins said. "She was always very healthy. She was always doing something, taking us to Campfire Girls, fishing, swimming. She was an excellent swimmer."The only clue anything might be unusual came when Bentley's appendix was removed, said 66-year-old Louise Allee, the fourth-born child and youngest of the daughters."The surgeon made a note that her appendix wasn't in the right spot when they took it out," Allee said, "but never said anything to us. Nobody said a thing when they took her gallbladder out and did a hysterectomy, either."The decision to become a body donor began with Jim Bentley, Rose Marie's husband, but she too "thought it was the greatest thing," Allee remembers."There was a poem that my dad found, and it was all about donating your parts," she said. "You know, 'give my eyes to a man who has never seen the sunrise' and the like. He kept showing us the poem. It was really important to them."The poem, written by Robert Test, opens with the line: "Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face, or love in the eyes of a woman," and ends with "If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever."The couple's beliefs about donation made an impact. All three daughters plan to donate their bodies for research.Rose Marie Bentley, a one in 50 million gal.Jim Bentley kept his promise and donated his body when he died of pneumonia more than a dozen years before his wife's death. His daughters know that he would have loved to have known about his wife's peculiar insides so he could have teased her about it."He also would have been tickled they could teach medical students something so different and really make some great use of her body," Allee said. And what would Bentley have said about being a one in 50 million kind of gal?"She would've just thought it was funny," Robbins said.Allee agreed: "She would have had a big smile on her face."(CNN)
Pawpaw Get raw pawpaw and wash it. It must be raw, not ripeDo not peel it and do not remove the seeds. After washing the outside neatly, slice it without peeling it into small small pieces. The cutting should be small like sugar cubes.Put all the small pieces of the raw pawpaw into any clean container.Fill the container with water to stop at the same point the sliced pawpaw stopped.Leave the pawpaw in the water for four days. For example if u soak it on a Monday, I count Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be the fourth day.On the Fourth day, the water will be looking white in colour. Seive it and throw away the pawpaw and the water becomes your cure for ulcer.DOSAGE: drink half a glass of the pawpaw water every morning, afternoon and evening. You will no longer feel those ulcer pains because it will heal the wounds inside that are causing the pain. This morning, afternoon and evening drinking of the pawpaw water can continue for weeks and months depending on how severe the ulcer is. It is not relief. It is a cure.Additional note: an ulcer is an internal wound usually in the stomach or intestines.Common causes of ulcer are infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and long-term use of aspirin and certain other painkillers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox, others). Stress and spicy foods do not cause peptic ulcers. However, they can make your symptoms worse.Pls avoid taking strong pain killers without prescription. If you take time to read the side effects you will see that the drugs for pain relief cause ulcer or wounds in the body. This treatment mentioned is not a reason not to go to hospital, because not all internal pains are ulcers.Let someone know and help someone get cured today.
