Snakes have been found in Liberian President George Weah's office, forcing him to work from his private residence. Press secretary Smith Toby told the BBC that on Wednesday two black snakes were found in the foreign affairs ministry building, his official place of work. All staff have been told to stay away until 22 April. "It's just to make sure that crawling and creeping things get fumigated from the building. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts the office of the president, so it did an internal memo asking the staff to stay home while they do the fumigation," Toby said. The office of the president has been based in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since a fire in 2006 gutted the nearby presidential mansion. A FrontPage Africa news website video shows workers trying to attack the snakes when they appeared near the building's reception. "The snakes were never killed. There was a little hole somewhere [through which] they made their way back" Toby said. Police and presidential security were seen guarding Mr Weah's residence in the capital Monrovia. A fleet of vehicles including escorts jeeps were parked outside. Mr Toby said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs started to fumigate on Friday. "That building's been there for years now, and [because of] the drainage system, the possibility of having things like snakes crawling in that building was high," he said. The president is definitely returning to his office on Monday after the fumigation whether or not the snakes are found and killed, Toby added.

People of my age and those before me attended public schools from primary to university.“Unfortunately, the elites that benefited from the system in the past have left public institutions to become vandalised, dilapidated and substituted it with a private education system that is affordable only to a very few.“The health system has also been vandalised and now people have to go on medical tourism in India, Egypt, and Europe. The unfortunate thing is sometimes before you get the air ambulance the will of Allah will take place,“ he said. The monarch said the elites that got power after the military created a political class that instituted thuggery, election malpractices, corruption and destroyed the Judiciary, Civil Service and security agencies.“These are all the result of the work of the political class and the unfortunate thing is that it is made to become something that is perpetual.“This has to be changed and our duty as Muslims is to learn from the ideals of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to save the society from eminent danger that is facing it.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the Ecological funds meant for interventions on ecological challenges in Nigeria can no longer be abused by the government of the day.Buhari, who was represented by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, representing Ondo North Senatorial district and Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, said the waste that hitherto characterised Ecological Funds has now been crushed. He said this at the inauguration and handing over of Ote River Channelisation, Erosion Control and Access Road in Osin Ekiti in Ekiti State executed by the federal government through the Ecological Funds Office. He said the project was geared towards improving the welfare of Nigerians at the grassroot, adding that the project was a clear demonstration of his commitment to development and bringing the presence of the Federal Government to the rural areas.“I have been familiar with the Ecological Fund since when I was in the public service and I know how it is being administered. You can hardly find any tangible project being done by the Ecological Fund, but since the Buhari administration took off, the Ecological Fund is now being used for the people.“This project is expected to check flooding and erosion menace in the communities around its environs.“The age-long problem of gully erosion and flooding in this part of the country cannot be overemphasized. I have no doubt the Federal Government intervention programme will bring a huge relief to communities which had for a very long time been stressed by these ecological challenges.“With this project, the living standards of the people in the communities within its environs would be enhanced. This would at the same time reduce dangers to lives and properties associated with erosion and persistent flooding that had been experienced in recent times,” Buhari said. The Olosin of Osin Ekiti, Oba Eniayewo Oyediran and the President of Osin Progressive Union, Elder Patrick Olayemi, expressed appreciation to the government for considering the town for the project, promising to take good care of the project for sustainability.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has kicked against the inclusion of Justice Joseph Oyewole as a member of the Appeal Panel on Osun governorship election petition. It alleged that the judge is an interested party and a friend of Governor Gboyega Oyetola. In a petition sent to the President of the Appeal Court on Thursday and signed by the duo of Emmanuel Onwubiko and Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA called for the removal of the judge from the panel if truly he was added to the five-man team. The petition reads: “We write as a human rights group that has consistently advocated for equity, fairness and fair hearing within the polity to bring to your attention a widely circulating report among members of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Osun state and beyond that they have imputed their strong ally and an interested party, Justice Oyewole as a judge on the Osun appeal panel.“Many top APC leaders are bragging and boasting in Osun right now that they have pocketed the panel by having an ally of the appellant, Gboyega Oyetola as a panel member and this is beginning to raise tensions amongst the populace.“We had conducted a search on who the said judge is and we found out many compromising facts that confirmed that Justice Oyewole as an interested party should not for the sake of justice and equity, be on the panel. They may have hidden the indicting facts from you but we have a duty to bring them to your attention to assist the temple of justice under your esteemed leadership.“My lord kindly note the following:-Justice Oyewole is a godson of Chief Bisi Akande, the former National Chairman of APC; they are from the same town, Ila Orangun;-Justice Oyewole was a judge of Lagos State High Court during Aregbesola’s tenure as governor of Osun state ;-When there was a vacancy in the Chief Justice of Osun state under Aregbesola, the governor pushed to import and elevate him above his senior to be made the state Chief judge in Osun state. The state erupted in protests and protestations against imposing a judge serving outside the state on his seniors in another state as the head of judiciary, forcing the governor to reconsider his plot;-The arrow head of the movement to force Oyewole on the state as Chief Judge then was the appellant who was then the Chief of Staff of Rauf Aregbesola;-When the plot failed because of mass resistance of Osun people, Aregbesola and the appellant succeeded using Osun slot to get Justice Oyewole elevated to the Court of Appeal, again above his peers and seniors.-Since the commencement of the Osun governorship petition hearing, the judge has been fingered as the contact person for Gboyega Oyetola. APC members in the state are not tired of declaring that they have their man at the Appeal Court;-It is therefore troubling to listen to APC members now boasting in the state that they have their man right on the appeal panel. My Lord will not allow a man to sit in a matter in which he is an interested party.“My Lord, Osun is currently in a state of fragile peace with the expectations of and faith of the people in the Judiciary as their last hope of getting justice. The controversial Osun election still remains a matter of national and international interest. The whole world is watching!“We are are aware of the riot act you read out to chairmen and members of election tribunals early this year. We are in the know of your insistence that justice must be done without fear or favour. We are also conscious of your pedigree and antecedent as an incorruptible judge and leader of justice.“It is with the preceding in mind that we humbly request the following:-That you kindly resist the satanic pressure to compromise the integrity of the Appeal panel for the Osun Governorship Election;-That you help Osun state to maintain subsisting peace which may be disrupted if an interested Justice is allowed to serve on his own case ;-That you remove Justice Oyewole from the list if it is true as APC members in Osun state are bragging that he is one of the panel members;-That you act as such on the weight of evidence adduced above in our paragraph 3;-That no Judge from Osun state or with affinity with the state should serve on the panel to ensure neutrality and no conflict of Interest.”

A Daniel has come to judgement.”
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has felicitated with Christian faithful across the country on the occasion of Easter, calling on them to live Christ-like lives and persevere in prayers for the country. In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja through Turaki Hassan, his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, the Speaker noted the significance of the period in the lives of Christians and the demonstration of God’s love for mankind without which there will be no Christianity. While urging Christians to persevere in prayers, Dogara stated that Nigeria would surely overcome all its challenges as according to him, they are never insurmountable and that mankind has always triumph over difficulties no matter how daunting and enormous they seem.He said, “Indeed, without Easter there would be no Christianity. As the song writer wrote; “when justice called for all my debts: the friend of sinner came instead.” For without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.“Salvation came to us because Jesus defeated death. And we follow him because he provided the solution to death.“Easter is God’s scandalous love when He choose to die for the sins of not His friends but enemies.“As Christians who are Christ-like, we must also demonstrate God’s love in us by loving all mankind, forgiving not just friends but enemies, praying for our own leaders and our country.“Indeed, our nation is faced with daunting challenges, from insecurity resulting in unprecedented bloodletting, massacres and abduction for ransom to poverty, and youth unemployment.“Daunting and enormous as they are, our challenges are never insurmountable as mankind has always overcame its limitations over time.“Let us therefore, not despair but persevere in prayers and supplications. May Christ’s triumph over death bring to live everything that is death in our lives and nation. Wishing us all a God filled Easter celebration. It is well with Nigeria.”
Officers of the Delta State police command, on Thursday, rescued a lady from suspected kidnappers/ritualists in Asaba. The lady was said to be returning from Ogbegonogo market when she boarded their tricycle. Two other gang members later joined her from both sides, leaving her in the middle.Trouble, however, started when the rider refused to stop at the victim’s destination, forcing her to raise an alarm that attracted some policemen who gave them a hot chase and eventually rescued the girl and arrested the suspects. An eyewitness said one of them in a bid to disappear threw a ring suspected to be magic ring in his mouth and attempted to vanish but the Police diffused the charm. Irate youths who gathered at the scene made efforts to go on jungle justice but the police prevented them.
One of the suspects arrested for kidnapping Lagos Fire Service Director Rasaki Musibau has said the gang collected N5million ransom for his release.Blessing Boyo, 29, told reporters that the gang leader identified simply as MK who’s still at large, had told them the money brought was N5million and that he would share it when they returned to base.Boyo was paraded alongside Smart Alfred Thursday evening by Police Commissioner Muazu.Narrating how they kidnapped Musibau and six others around 8pm on April 6, Boyo said they used timbers to block the road before ambushing their victims. He said the four guns used for the operation were brought by MK who allegedly lured him into kidnapping.Boyo said: “MK called me for the operation. He had guys in the bush. He brought out guns and said it was kidnapping work. I have not kidnapped before. I used to carry timber with an operator. “We blocked the road with woods, stopped vehicles and kidnapped them. We had four guns and it was MK that brought it. I have not been given any money. He said we should return to base first. It was MK that was with the money. He told us that the money was N5million. “My first time in Lagos was on April 5. I am from Arogbo in Ondo State. We did not beat the man. We took the man to the bush. He was fed cooked food. MK’s boys cooked Egusi and Eba and the one was served.” Corroborating Boyo’s statement, Alfred, also a native of Arogbo in Ondo State said they followed MK because he fooled them he was a timbre operator and needed carriers. He said it was when they got to the bush that he told them it was kidnapping job and since he was jobless, he joined him. “The guy told us to follow him to do carrier work since we were jobless at the time. He approached us because he knows we are into carrier work. I followed him to the bush because i believed it was carrier work. “I did not understand what he meant. He showed us guns and said this is the work he is into. I asked if he wanted to kill me and he said he will show me how he does the work. As we got to where we wanted to operate, he cut a wood and blocked the roads.
the case of Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Presidency has said his conviction of by the Code of Conduct Tribunal for false assets declaration is “a major victory for the anti-corruption policy of the Buhari administration”.In an emailed statement to journalists, hours after the CCT’s ruling, the Presidency said the outcome of the trial “demonstrates clearly that the law demonstrates clearly that the law is no respecter of persons, titles, social or political connections”.The Presidency made no reference to the rejection of the CCT’s judgment by Justice Onnoghen, who has also filed a notice of appeal. It, however, stressed that the essence of the rule of law is to hold everyone accountable equally before the law, regardless of their high or law status in the society, and defended the war against corruption, insisting it is all encompassing and is not designed to persecute anyone for political or other reasons.“The rule of law would lose its meaning and validity if only the weak, the poor and powerless are punished for their violations of the law. Countries succeed because the rule of law is evenly upheld and enforced,” it said.“The war against corruption would go nowhere if the high and mighty are spared because of their influence and connections. You can’t fight corruption by allowing impunity because the rule of law cannot function where impunity is tolerated.”Also, the Presidency said that “the conviction of Justice Onnoghen should send a clear message that the dragnet against corruption will be spread widely to hold public officials accountable, whether they are politicians, Judges, civil servants or holding positions of public trust”.

Liquid blood and urine have been found inside a prehistoric 42,000-year-old foalBy Gianluca Mezzofiore, CNNUpdated at 1508 GMT (2308 HKT) April 18, 2019Liquid body fluids have been found inside a prehistoric 42,000 year old foal.(CNN) — Russian researchers have found liquid blood and urine inside the frozen carcass of a foal that died 42,000 years ago in Siberia's Verkhoyansk region. The animal's body fluids were extracted during an autopsy and tested in the hope of cloning the extinct species, according to Semyon Grigoriev, director of the Mammoth Museum at Northeastern Federal University (NEFU) in Yakutsk.Mammoth tusk hunters discovered the ancient foal embedded in the permafrost of the massive Batagaika crater during the summer of 2018, on a day when the temperature had plummeted to -67.8 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit). The foal was found in the Batagaika crater.Grigoriev told CNN via email that the foal appeared to have been just two weeks old when it died, likely by drowning in mud which then became part of the permafrost."An autopsy showed the foal carcass was extremely well-preserved, the body even without deformation," he added. "The hair cover also preserved most parts of the carcass, especially at the head and legs."A researcher on site with the foal.Researchers inspect the animal. The preservation of the animal's fur was extremely rare, Grigoriev said, before adding, "Now we can say what color was the wool of the extinct horses of the Pleistocene era."The discovery of liquid blood and urine is rarer still. Grigoriev said he was aware of only one other case where liquid blood was found in an animal from the Pleistocene epoch, which lasted from around 2.6 million years ago until about 11,700 years ago. That was in the frozen carcass of an adult mammoth discovered by Grigoriev's team in May 2013 at Little Lyakhovsky Island off the northeast coast of Russia."As a rule, the blood coagulates or even turns to powder in the ancient remains of animals of the ice age, even if the carcass is preserved seems to be well," Grigoriev explained. "This is due to mummification when moisture and other biological fluids gradually evaporate over thousands of years, even if the remains are in the permafrost. The remains are preserved best if they are in the ice, as it was with our mammoth."Researchers hope to clone the foal.Grigoriev said NEFU specialists were working with experts from the controversial South Korean Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in an effort to cultivate the foal's cells for cloning, though he was pessimistic about their chances.Sooam is led by scientist Hwang Woo-suk, who claimed in 2004 that he had successfully cloned human embryonic stem cells before admitting he had faked his findings."I think that even the unique preservation [of] blood is absolutely hopeless for cloning purposes since the main blood cells -- the red blood cells or erythrocytes -- do not have nuclei with DNA," Grigoriev said. "We [are] trying to find intact cells in muscle tissue and internal organs that are also very well-preserved."The ancient horse will be exhibited across Japan from June to September 2020 as part of The Mammoth exhibition.http://ceesty.com/wNYOGt

I also believe that Christians, like their counterparts in other faiths, have spent the Lenten Season to stand in the gap for Nigeria in particular and humanity in general.“The prayers and fasting of Nigerians have been the bulwark against all the centrifugal and centripetal forces threatening to pull our nation down. We must not relent but only need to add discipline, obedience to law and more intense patriotism to our attitude.”He expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their steadfastness and prayers, which have had immense impact on the peace, unity and continued survival of the nation.According to him, the successful conduct of the 2019 general election was a direct testament of the sincere efforts and prayers of all Nigerians.“I congratulate Christians and all Nigerians for the demonstration of faith in our common heritage through fasting, prayer, sober reflection and sacrifices in the interest of the country for which we now commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ,” he stated. While acknowledging that the country is still confronted by developmental, economic and social challenges, Saraki insisted that all the obstacles are surmountable if we all play our roles patriotically and commit to being our brother’s keeper. He urged Christians not to relent in their prayers for God’s positive intervention in the affairs of the country at all times.
An Ikeja High Court on Thursday rendered a copy of the Department of State Services (DSS) report to the Nigerian Senate on Mr Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), inadmissible. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Doris Okuwobi, in a ruling during the ongoing N5billion libel suit filed by Magu against the publishers of The Sun Newspapers, held that the report was inadmissible due to fact that it was not a Certified True Copy.“I hereby accept the submission of the claimant’s (Magu) counsel to the effect that it is only a certified true copy of a public document properly issued by a public officer that is admissible under Section 104(1) of the Evidence Act.“There is no provision in the Act making ordinary photocopies of public documents without certification as admissible.“I find the document not admissible as it is not in admissible form. The document is hereby rejected and marked as exhibit rejected number one,” Justice Okuwobi said.NAN reports that during proceedings on Feb. 28, Mr Charles Ewelunta, the defence counsel to the publishers of the Sun Newspapers while cross-examining Mr Usman Zakari, an EFCC investigator, had sought to tender the DSS report on Magu. However, Magu’s counsel, Mr Wahab Shittu objected to the tendering of the report on the grounds that it was not a Certified True Copy (CTC).Following the ruling, Ewelunta continued the cross-examination of Zakari, who is the the Head of Intelligence and Special Operations Unit of the EFCC.Zakari said he worked closely with the anti-graft boss and that he started to view Magu from a different perspective after reading the allegedly damaging publication.“I work with him closely, I know him very well. The claimant is an asset to the EFCC, he is a man of honour and integrity. Due to this publication, I don’t hold him in as high regard as before.“I’m not aware that the claimant associates with certified corrupt Nigerians, it is correct that the DSS investigated the claimant but I’m unaware of all the investigations the DSS conducted against the claimant.“I read the story which is the subject of this suit online that is why we are here,” he said.Zakari, under cross-examination, denied allegations that Magu had property beyond the shores of Nigeria.“The claimant does not have any property out of the country. He has a house in Kano, a townhouse jn Karshi area of Abuja and a family house in Maiduguri.“I have visited those three properties and he does not have any property outside Nigeria, that publication falsely mentioned he owned two properties in the high brow area of Maitama, Abuja.“It is not correct that the claimant is not worthy to be entrusted with responsibilities and it is also not correct that the claimant is lacking in integrity.“We are in court because we want the ownership of those Maitama houses be proved and if proved otherwise, the court should grant our prayers,” Zakari said.Following the EFCC investigator’s evidence, Shittu told the court that there were two more subpoenaedwitnesses who are to testify before the claimant closes his case against The Sun Newspapers.Justice Okuwobi adjourned the case until June 6 for further hearing.NAN reports that the acting EFCC Chairman is suing the publishers of the Sun Newspaper, claiming N5billion in damages over a publication that alleged that the DSS had uncovered two houses in Maitama, Abuja, which were traced to his wife. The EFCC boss is also demanding that the Sun Newspapers publish an apology and retract the allegedly libellous publication.Magu while giving evidence during proceedings on Dec. 17, 2018, denied owning two houses in Maitama, Abuja. He had said: “The publication is totally false. Even if I have the money, I wouldn’t buy houses in Maitama.“They said the houses are located in the Darrubbe and Missouri, Maitama and that they belong to my wife.“My wife, Fatima Yakaka Magu is a civil servant and cannot afford to buy houses in Maitama.“I am an international man and the publication has damaged my reputation. The name Magu does not only end with me, the publication caused a whole lot of trauma for my lineage.”

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has called on the Nigeria Police to parade the professional examination cheats recently arrested by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, JAMB.JAMB had announced the arrest of over 100 professional examination cheats during this year’s (2019) examinations. The suspects include: two biological children of the owner of an accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) center in Lagos.MURIC has now reacted to the development in a press statement signed by its Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, and made available to DAILY POST on ThursdayThe statement reads, “The arrest of these professional examination writers is an eye-opener. It confirms what we have been saying for several years. The phenomenon of the lazy Nigerian youth is no longer a myth. Many people wanted to crucify President Muhammadu Buhari when he used that phrase some months ago. But we can all see now.“Whereas Nigeria is blessed with many hardworking youngsters, there exists many black sheep who tarnish the image of the industrious ones. We call on the security agencies to publicly parade those caught in order to serve as deterrent to others. They must not be treated with kid gloves.“Their names and faces must be exposed to friends and family members. They must be paraded as the bad eggs in society. We all know that societal norms and values have long broken down but we never knew that things had degenerated to this level. It is such a big shame.“Where is the well-known African sense of dignity? Where is the pride of the black man who, decades back, could beat his chest and proudly rub shoulders with the intellectual giants of the West? The owner of the Lagos CBT center who allowed his two biological sons to impersonate other candidates is a disgrace to all Nigerian parents. His despicable conduct confirms the breakdown in family norms and values in the Nigerian society.“This is a father training his own sons to fill up Nigerian universities with unqualified students. Some of those ‘assisted’ by them will graduate as ‘medical doctors’ who will become harbingers of death to hundreds of innocent patients simply because they were never really qualified to read medicine in the first place.“It is more painful when we realise that these people have been doing it for years and getting away with it. In essence, we are saying that our universities are filled with unqualified undergraduates while thousands of employees brandish university degrees which they cannot defend.“We are not surprised, however. Both the federal and state governments failed to meet global best standards in terms of funding of the education sector. Only one or two states made the education sector a priority. The effect has been a colossal loss in qualitative education.“Instances of this dwindling performance can be found in the results published by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in past years. Only 28.58 percent of the candidates obtained credit passes in five subjects including English Language and General Mathematics in the WASSCE examination of year 2015. 38.58 percent passed the subjectsin 2016 while the percentage fell to 26.01 percent in 2017.“Things got so bad that an unnamed Nigerian who called himself a ‘graduate’ posted a highly embarrassing message on Facebook in 2018 in which he said, ‘It’s with deeps sence nd humility to told public, friends and family that… I had been collected my result yesterday 30/04/2018 around 2.00 pm with the overall of 3.44 CGPA. I’m now a graduate’. How he made this grade point remains a mystery but at least he has succeeded in exposing the rot in the system.“Only three Nigerian universities were included in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings out of 1,250 tertiary institutions around the globe. Only one (the University of Ibadan) was in the 2018 list and it was ranked number 801 out of 1,000 universities. The same university was the only one included among the 800 best universities in the world in 2016 and its position was 601. No single Nigerian university made the 2015 list released by the Centre for World University Rankings. The United States alone had eight among the top ten.“This generally poor performance resulted in parents’ loss of confidence in the Nigerian education system and those who can afford it sought admission for their children outside the shores of this country. It also informed their desire for cutting corners particularly by parents who are thin in integrity but fat in indecency.”MURIC, however, commended JAMB’s chief executive, Professor Ishaq Oloyede for the giant strides recorded by the examination body and for sanitizing the system.“It must also be admitted that Oloyede’s achievements are a reflection of the deeply embedded integrity in the numero uno citizen, President Muhammadu Buhari. It would have been another cup of tea if the president himself is of questionable character. Those who are still cynical about the change mantra have another nut to crack.“In our closing remarks, we call for the public parade of the professional examination writers. The law must be allowed to take its full course no matter whose ox is gored. The owner of the notorious CBT center in Lagos whose two sons are involved must face the full wrath of the law while himself and his CBT center must be banned for life. He is a disgrace to parenthood,” the statement added.
Philanthropist and founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates on Wednesday congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election.Speaking in a telephone call, Bill Gates said he was happy to be associated with the Nigerian President. He also restated his commitment to the success of the administration as well as the progress, prosperity and well-being of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.Gates expressed willingness to do more for the country. Also speaking, President Buhari reiterated his belief that Gates’ wealth has benefited Nigeria’s development, and expressed appreciation for the call.Buhari commended Bill Gates for his consistent and generous support to public causes around the globe, and specifically for supporting the eradication of polio and HIV diseases in Africa and Nigeria in particular.A statement by Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity), Garba Shehu quoted him as saying “I am very happy the way your projects have touched the life of the average Nigerian.“The people of this country have given their verdict.”
There is palpable anxiety within the judiciary, as the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT is set to deliver judgment on the non-assets declaration charge the Federal Government preferred against the resigned Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.Justice Walter Onnoghen and Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja, Mr. Danladi Umar The Mr Danladi Umar-led three-man panel tribunal which had earlier announced that it will deliver the judgment by 9 am today has however deferred it till 12noon.Though the embattled former CJN arrived the CCT at about 8.40am ahead of the verdict, no member of the prosecution team was available when the panel conveyed its decision to shift the delivery time. Onnoghen who had waited in his black SUV Jeep, left with his convoy, immediately he was notified of the development. A handful of his lawyers and aides were also at the tribunal which is situated within the Jabi District of Abuja. It will be recalled that the tribunal had on Monday, reserved judgment on the matter after FG and Onnoghen adopted their final written arguments on Monday. Whereas Onnoghen urged the tribunal to discharge and acquit him, insisting that the FG failed to prove that he committed an offence that is known to the law. On the other hand, FG, asked the CCT to convict and impose maximum punishment on the former CJN, contending that it successfully established that he acted in breach of the code of conduct for public officers in the country. The tribunal said it would also on Thursday, delivering a ruling on two applications the erstwhile CJN filed to challenge the competence of the criminal proceeding the government initiated against him.FG had in the charge marked CCT/ABJ/01/19, alleged that Onnoghen’s failure to properly declare his assets, was in violation of section 15(2) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. It further alleged that the ex-CJN who was suspended from office by President Muhammadu Buhari on January 25, operated five foreign bank accounts, contrary to the code of conduct for public officers. However, in opposition to his trial, Justice Onnoghen, queried the validity of the charge against him, stressing that FG violated established judicial precedents by not allowing the National Judicial Council, NJC, to firstly investigate the allegation against him, before it rushed the matter to the CCT. He argued that failure to channel the petition against him, as well as the outcome of the investigation that was purportedly conducted on assets declaration forms he submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, to the NJC, rendered the charge invalid. More so, the defendant urged the CCT to abide by a subsisting Court of Appeal decision in Nganjiwa v Federal Republic of Nigeria (2017) LPELR-43391, to the effect that any misconduct attached to the office and functions of a judicial officer, must first be reported to and handled by the NJC, pursuant to the provisions of the laws. He maintained that only after the NJC had pronounced against such judicial officer could prosecuting agencies of the Federal Government proceed to initiate a criminal proceeding. Justice Onnoghen drew the attention of the tribunal to its judgment that quashed a similar charge against another Justice of the Supreme Court, Sylvester Ngwuta, on the ground that the NJC ought to have been allowed to look into the matter before the case was filed. He stressed that the two judgments were yet to be set aside by the Supreme Court. Aside from challenging powers of the tribunal to try him, Onnoghen said he was afraid that he would not be accorded fair hearing by the tribunal which he described as an appendage of the Presidency. He insisted that he was entitled to a fair hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, under section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. The defendant argued that the CCB which recommended his trial, the Attorney General of the Federation who is prosecuting him, and the tribunal itself, are all answerable to the Executive Arm of the government. He equally asked the CCT chairman to disqualify himself from the matter considering that he equally has a criminal allegation pending against him. Nevertheless, the tribunal, in a ruling on March 11, relied on section 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, and Paragraph 5(5) of its Practice Direction, and held that it would not consider the merit of Onnoghen’s objection to the charge, till conclusion of the trial. While FG closed its case against the ex-CJN after it produced three witnesses to testify before the tribunal, the embattled former CJN who initially proposed to also call three witnesses to defend the charge, announced his decision to close his defence after his driver testified to the fact that he was present when the defendant submitted his assets declaration forms at CCB’s head office in Abuja. Onnoghen had on April 4, resigned his position as CJN, shortly after the NJC, sent a report of if its investigation into the allegation against him, to President Buhari.Vanguard
